Big Star - Line Records [Germany] 2-Fer CD
Anybody out there have this CD? Howzit compare to the Fantasy issue [which I hear isn't so hot]?
I'm gonna have to AB 'em when I get back home. FWIW, though, I compared some tracks with some Mp3s of the first album I have (most assuredly ripped from either the Fantasy set or the clone Big Beat set), and I didn't detect a huge difference. Who knows? I'm disappointed that the MoFi SACD got cancelled...

Well, I no longer have the Fantasy issue to compare it with, but I remember being blown away with the Line disc when I first got it. I recall the Fantasy being flat and dry whereas the guitars on the Line positively *chime*. Now that may be due to an EQ boost--I dunno. I've got the original vinyl so I suppose I could A/B 'um. Actually, I will do just that. I'll let you know in a day or two what I come up with. God. If I could only get Steve to listen to it and have him rave that it sounds just like the master tapes and then half the world would be begging me to make 'um copies. And then I would become some sort of Big Star guru hotshot and members here and elsewhere would be emailing me for advise about D/A converters, girlfriends, Asian houseboys and the like. It's a dream I have.

I like Jellyfish (and related bands: Grays, Falkner solo, Imperial Drag, Moog Cookbook, Umajets) and Merrymakers (also Jellyfish-related). I've also heard Crunchy and Jughead and the Mustard Seeds and Spot. Do those count? What about the Posies and Redd Kross?
There's actually quite a few terrific "power pop" groups from the 80s, in additon to those from the 70s. If David were to send you a copy of Big Star, that would certainly be a good start in discovering those earlier groups. Many/most lean a bit more on the "power" angle than the "pop," however.

I can't imagine Glam Rock ever being crisp clear and listenable. One exception. Gary Glitter's, Glitter album. This was never to my knowledge on CD, but the Bell Gatefold LP has the most amazing 70's mixing and clairity you will ever hear. Most other Bell pressings, including Partridge Family LP's have some amazing dynamics pressed into the walls of that vinyl.
But I digress.... It is Big Star the 70's Glam Band we are discussing??

Well, you got the "That 70s Show" detail right, but Big Star are really not at all absolutely as far from glam as you could possibly get. Really.
They basically lasted two and a half albums, two of which are normal in a fairly "revolutionary in a decidedly counterrevolutionary" way, and one of which is decidedly not, at all, and is in fact my favorite (showing what a perverse bastard I am).
Fairly essentially, and cheap/easy to acquire their entire studio catalogue (two discs!).
They basically lasted two and a half albums, two of which are normal in a fairly "revolutionary in a decidedly counterrevolutionary" way, and one of which is decidedly not, at all, and is in fact my favorite (showing what a perverse bastard I am).
