Ryan,
Actually, the problem is, I don't think, or feel, Bruce's music, is listenable, these days. He "lost it", for me, at "American Skin".
His music is too topical. But what he, apparently doesn't understand is, the BEST topical song writers, wrote songs that were memorable, lyrically and musically.
Unfortunately, Bruce can't seem to master that talent, in himself. If he did, we wouldn't be, even, caring about Dylan, these days.
After, or around, Human Touch, he just couldn't seem to communicate, to listeners anymore. Tom Joad, did him in, as it were.
I feel, people find him...compelling(?), because EVERYONE is scrambling for ANYONE to take Dylan's mantle, in this music genre, but there is NO ONE strong enough, or talented enough, since he came on the scene.
Springsteen is still suffering from the aftereffects of that "New Dylan" hype, he got at the beginning of his career, and Springsteen, himself, is starting to believe it, because he feels he doesn't have ANYWHERE else to go, career-wise.
It's sad to see him struggling, and trying to be meaningful. He just ain't and he will NEVER be able to carry Dylan's jockstrap, let alone, write something meaningful, and genuinely, topical. Basically, Springsteen, will always be a Rocker, and the sooner he realizes this, the less foolish his legacy will be. It's so god awful embarassing now, I don't know how he has the nerve to show up for concerts, let alone, release this Junk.
