Motown board?

Postby lukpac » Sat May 21, 2005 11:10 am

Don't know if Grant ever checks in anymore, or if someone else knows, but...

Anyone know how long the Motown chat board has been down? I seem to end up there once or twice a year...

On a related note, there's apparently a box set in the works that's going to feature a ton of remixes (in the better fidelity/new stereo/etc sense, not "let's add a drum machine"). My Girl is from a sync of 3 3-track stages, for a total of 7 tracks. I know one of the last things the world needs is another mix of My Girl, but it does sound interesting. I believe it's something to tie in with a PBS special.

Like Grant, I too have a "thing" for the exact "mix moments" we're used to that creates our memories of the music. This, for me, was the driving reason to make the set - - to have all the original Motown hits, with all the punch and bottom of the mono single versions, except, in Stereo. In my opinion, the recent Motown Stereo stuff is amazing (I'm speaking of the original mixes issued on cd)...this was an opportunity to care for some of the tracks, that have been over-looked, or left over from their initial cd debut in the 80's.

I also like both differences in versions of "Heat Wave" and "Please Mr. Postman", but felt very frustrated by the edits on either version of the original releases. The goal for me was, "the same - but different".

Sure, I guess we could have just used the same old cd dubs of all the songs (like the alternate Jimmy Mack, and faded early "My Girl"). To me, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do so much more. I sincerely hope you won't be dissapointed.

Tom has really delivered the goods, no fancy tricks - - just the sound (minus some hiss) that truly make you believe you are in the studio with the artists. I've heard that line for years and always hate it, because so few "remastered" sets, are really "remastered" from the first generation record masters and multi tracks - over 30 songs on this collection are.

Here is a copy of our new Motown Stereo Box Set new stereo mixes (as featured on all four discs) from the original multi-tracks, and session tapes. All of the following tracks were mixed for the first time ever, found exclusively for this collection, and nowhere else:

1. Shop Around - The Miracles (stereo hit version)
2. Please Mr. Postman - The Marvelettes (unedited, extended stereo mix)
3. Do You Love Me - The Contours (stereo hit version)
4. (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave - Martha & The Vandellas (unedited, extended stereo mix)
5. Quicksand - Martha & The Vandellas (extended stereo mix)
6. Heaven Must Have Sent You - The Elgins (extended stereo mix)
7. Back In My Arms Again - The Supremes (extended stereo mix)
8. Going To A Go-Go (extended stereo mix)
9. The Tracks Of My Tears (really really extended stereo mix)
10. Shotgun - Jr. Walker & His All Stars (extended stereo mix)
11. It's The Same Old Song (extended stereo mix)
12. What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - (new extended stereo mix, alternate spoken-word introduction)
13. Uptight (Everything Is Alright) - Little Stevie Wonder (extended stereo mix)
14. Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations (extended stereo strings version)
15. Stop! In The Name Of Love - The Supremes (extended stereo mix)
16. My Guy - Mary Wells (extended stereo mix)
17. My Girl - The Temptations (extended stereo mix)
18. My Girl Has Gone - The Miracles (extended stereo mix)
19. Since I Lost My Baby - The Temptations (stereo hit version)
20. Reach Out, I'll Be There - Four Tops (really really extended stereo mix)
21. Jimmy Mack - Martha & The Vandellas (extended stereo single version)
22. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (extended stereo mix)
23. He Was Really Sayin' Something - The Velvelettes (extended stereo mix)
24. Put Yourself In My Place - The Elgins (extended stereo mix)
25. Purple Rain Drops - Stevie Wonder (cd debut) - (extended stereo mix)
26. Third Finger, Left Hand - Martha & The Vandellas - (extended stereo mix)
27. Just Look What You Have Done - Brenda Holloway (extended stereo mix)
28. Keep On Loving Me - Frances Nero (extended stereo mix)
29. Forever - The Marvelettes (extended stereo mix)
30. You'll Lose A Precious Love - The Temptations (extended stereo mix)

*****

All the tv/dvd clips we're also mixed to stereo using the original session tapes and multi-tracks, two additional stereo mixes on the dvd, and not on the cd box are "OOO Baby Baby" by The Miracles and "Ain't That Peculiar" by Marvin Gaye.

*****

Any time we license a CD compilation to tie-into one of my television specials, I always create an exclusive to PBS version featuring some different tracks as a special "thank you" to the viewers that do support PBS with a pledge. This is the reason for the difference in two versions of the fourth disc.

If you like what you hear when it comes out, praise the Shout Factory and Motown folks for their supporting this dream effort of mine. If you don't like what you here - blame me. I accept 100% responsibility and accountability for the creative, content, sequencing and mix supervision of this collection. I don't check all the boards all the time, and prefer to respond directly as I welcome individual feedback, please email me at: tjl950@aol.com, please feel free to write to me with your concerns, frustrations, complaints, feedback, oh yeah..and support too.

Here's some more info from someone that has head a promo of the upcoming box. I'm really looking forward to this...

"I have had a chance to hear several of the remixed tracks from the Motown Box via an advanced sampler and what I have heard is certainly eye-opening!! These are all unedited versions of what was on the original multi-tracks. I have had the opportunity to hear:

Tracks of My Tears
Jimmy Mack
Heatwave
Uptight (Everything is Alright)
My Girl
Please Mr. Postman
It's The Same Old Song
Forever

Hearing these sometimes overly familiar tracks in unedited versions has been a real treat for me!

On "Tracks of My Tears", Smokey becomes the most soulful I have ever heard him in the minute or so after the song was faded on the original 45 and LP versions.

There is also a true stereo mix of "Jimmy Mack" (the 45 RPM version) - that really stomps and pumps along with lots of energy.

"Heatwave" also has the long sax break in the middle and all the repeats at the end and then some!

"My Girl" runs all the way to the cold ending on the mulitrack.

"It's The Same Old Song" sound very dynamic and clear.

The sound on these tracks reminds me somewhat of DVD-A or SACD mixes. The mono purists looking for more mono will not find it here. However, I have been utterly fascinated listening to these versions and look forward to rest"
