Stones redux

Postby lukpac » Thu Jul 07, 2005 10:31 pm

I've been listening to a few of the SACDs recently, and a few things come to mind...

- I'm still happy they did the right thing with 2120 (long AND stereo).

- This stereo mix of Satisfaction is just strange. The fidelity on the backing and vocals (albeit in mono) is quite good. That split acoustic guitar/piano is just goofy, though. And why just the remix - sorry, "alternate stereo mix" - of Satisfaction? If they were doing that, why not Get Off Of My Cloud, Play With Fire, etc...?

- Beggars and LIB are really great.

- all of the narrowing and noise reduction still drives me nuts.

Still waiting on my "master tape" version of the stereo Have You Seen Your Mother...

I know someone who apparently has a/the 15 IPS master of the album that became Dartford Renegades. Why a 9 song album of stereo tracks (some already released) would have been compiled I don't know, but supossedly ABKCO threw it away. He's said he'll make me a copy, but I guess he's been busy with other stuff. I bug him about it every now and then.

Not sure why decent versions of 19th Nervous Breakdown and The Last Time have shown up but not Have You Seen Your Mother.

One other note...

I don't know how it sounds on previous versions, but Sympathy For The Devil has some high end issues near the end, mostly in the right channel. Not a big deal unless under headphones, but there nevertheless. Never noticed that before...

http://cds.jrd.org.uk/list/cd.rol.dren.shtml

1. 3:56 19th Nervous Breakdown
2. 3:07 Get Off Of My Cloud
3. 3:28 The Last Time
4. 4:01 Satisfaction
5. 3:02 Heart Of Stone
6. 3:22 Paint It Black
7. 11:27 Goin' Home
8. 2:40 Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby (Standing In The Shadow)
9. 4:07 19th Nervous Breakdown
10. 3:57 Let's Spend Some Time Together
11. 1:56 I Wanna Be Your Man
12. 3:01 And Mr. Spector & Mr. Pitney
13. 2:23 Mona
14. 2:54 Walkin' Thru The Sleepy City
15. 2:29 Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind
Total 55:50

Don't recall what he said the order was on his tape (if he even knew), but it would only comprise tracks 1-9.

One of the 19th Nervous Breakdown tracks is the one with alternate vocals.

Been trying for a few years.

He did send me a version from a copy tape of some sort (which he later agreed didn't sound that good). It still has a lot of problems, but certain elements *do* sound better than other sources, notably the horns.

I also have a version of 19th Nervous Breakdown that he sent me, which sounds about the same. As I *know* better quality versions exist of that, I hold out hope that the same is true for HYSYMB.

David must not be feeling well. It's been 20 hours and he hasn't chimed in on a Stones thread.

That's weird. The horns sound much less screechy but the rest of it sounds crappy. While it's certainly true stereo the left channel has much more treble than the right.

Compare that to one of the previous "best" versions I have around:

http://lukpac.org/mp3.not/have_you_seen_your_mother.mp3

Like I said, though, 19th sounds about the same (far worse than the "best" version I have), and my source claims my "best" version sounds like crap next to the one he has, so I hold out hope...

I'll bug him the next time I see him online.

What am I supposed to say in this thread, other than:

a) I wish the fourth disc of that American Gold Stones retrospective wasn't missing, as the first three discs include the stereo TLT and 19th. The fourth has "Mother" on it, but I don't have the disc. So clearly Dick Bartley has SOME tapes.

b) Who the fuck is this source, already?

Might this guy be interested in a trade? Between all of us I'm sure we have something that interests him..
