So I finally ILLed the ABKCO (old) More Hot Rocks, and set about comparing it to some of the stuff I have up here (mostly to the old London More Hot Rocks).
The results are really interesting. On some songs--like "Tell Me"--there's really very little difference. On others, like "Child of the Moon" the London is appreciably better; the old ABKCO version of that track is afflicted with an odd, "transistor radio" EQ, as are several others (like We Love You, which also has its channels reversed). Some differences, however, are hard to account for. For example, the London "I'm Free" runs faster than does the ABKCO; in fact, the speed of the London matches the speed of the one on the new ABKCO More Hot Rocks. However, the old London December's Children matches the slower, slightly-muffled version found on the old ABKCO More Hot Rocks (which supports my idea that the album tapes for "December's Children" are universally shitty, and that ABKCO likely pieced their new version together from the original sources). As the London MHR "What To Do" also doesn't quite match (but comes close to) the London Aftermath version, this also means that London *did* use different tapes for MHR in at least some cases.

I'm confused, but I did tell you I finally picked up an old ABKCO MHR. And then forgot about it ("When did I get that CD?").
I've got a CD-R of MHR2, but I never got MHR1 in any form.

"I know because it is impossible for a tape to hold the compression levels of these treble boosted MFSL's like Something/Anything. The metal particulate on the tape would shatter and all you'd hear is distortion if even that." - VD
With the London December's Children, the tracks all sound so drastically different, tonally. (Same thing with the London Now, only Now the effect is even more jarring.) So I'm not sure that the Londons of those albums weren't also pieced together somehow. I've never heard the Abkco's of either, though, so I can't be much help with comparing.
Still haven't heard the London MHR1/2. Those two discs and Flowers are all that's missing from my London collection...I can help with FLACs, possibly, of everything else. I'm particularly interested in whether the mastering changed at any point on any of the generations of London discs, besides HR1...
