I was going to ask the same thing. Or "tube-o-phonic distortion" for that matter. Many Hoffman CDs have *less* midrange in comparison to other issues.

Distortion and midrange boost? On what?

What COLA said. The Kinks might have been the worst-recorded major rock band in history, at least up until Lola. Their '60s records are rough going sonically no matter how much fairy dust is sprinkled on them.

Fortunately, the actual music is beyond reproach, so the dodgy sound of their records and CDs doesn't bother me.
We were right about Vietnam. We were right about Nixon. We were right about Reaganomics. Trust us -- we're right about Bush, too.

See, I'm not sure...I've heard some ARTHUR tracks on PRT discs that sound absolutely amazing. Prior to that it's definitely rough going, though, you're right.

But bad recordings can still be ruined completely by the mastering, or they can at least be presented as good as possible. That difference can be huge, in my opinion. If I listen to the Kinks, I don't mind the limitations given by the recordings. I absolutely don't want to hear the limitations of incompetent mastering on top of that.

I think the Essential monos sound like shit. Headache enducing. Some deft EQ moves and they're a lot more listenable.
