New Springsteen on DualDisc only

Yikes. Considering many manufacturers, including Sony, have told consumers to be wary about this new format (see http://www.highfidelityreview.com/news/ ... ?offset=15 for a bunch of advisories), this seems like a dangerous move.

I think I'll burn this to a CD-R and play that instead.

Since Sony doesn't support DVD-A, I'm assuming that the 5.1 mix will be DD.

DEVILS & DUST (COLUMBIA RECORDS) TO BE RELEASED IN DUALDISC FORMAT ON APRIL 26

Bruce Springsteen's new album, Devils & Dust (Columbia Records) will be released exclusively in DualDisc format on April 26 in the US, with the full album on CD on one side of the disc and DVD content on the other side.

The DVD side will feature the first live performances of Devils & Dust material. Filmmaker/photographer Danny Clinch captured new, acoustic renditions of "Devils & Dust," "Long Time Comin'," "Reno," All I'm Thinkin' About," and "Matamoras Banks," each with Springsteen's extensive, personal introductions. The performances were filmed in New Jersey in February 2005. The DVD side will also contain the entire album mixed in 5.1 channel surround sound and in stereo.

Springsteen closed shows from 'The Rising' tour by showing Clinch's black and white, super 8mm film of the performer singing a country blues version of "Countin' on a Miracle," a track from 'The Rising.' Danny Clinch has directed several music films, including "Ben Harper: Pleasure and Pain," and has authored two books of photography.

Columbia Records will also release a deluxe edition of Devils & Dust with bonus photographs and unique, song specific elements for each of the album's twelve tracks. The deluxe edition of Devils & Dust will also be released in DualDisc format.

DualDisc releases are two-sided discs with a conventional CD side and a DVD side, allowing artists to use audio and video content on a single two-sided disc. For more information on DualDisc technology, please log on to http://www.dualdisc.com.

What's the big deal? If compatibility proves to be such a problem, Sony will get tons of returns, and DualDisc will either die or be reworked. If your Springsteen disc doesn't work, you can either get your money back or burn it to a CDR, as you mentioned. Obviously it would be a pain in the ass if you had to burn every DualDisc to CDR, but the format wouldn't last very long if that were necessary.

Really, what's the worst that can happen?

Ironically enough, I discovered this weekend that the CD side of Sony DualDiscs don't appear to work in my Sony laptop...

Anyway, it's not really a "big deal," of course, in the context of world hunger or whatever. I just find it exasperating that the labels are shoving this brain-damaged format down our throats instead of just making two-disc CD/DVD packages instead -- which are probably cheaper to produce, can contain actual label artwork, and have no compatibility problems at all. Plus you get a copy for the car and a copy for the home theater! Brilliant!

Too brilliant for the record labels, I guess. They'd rather spend millions on a kludgy two-sided, artless, scratch-prone, incompatible, 60-minute maximum, nonstandard disc that no one asked for and the major player manufacturers warn you about using. Either that, or put out sane 2-disc sets like the R.E.M. reissues, but price them in the stratosphere ($25 list).

I suppose I have a low tolerance for gross stupidity.

Nor either of the Sony CD players in my house (one is part of the Sony minisystem I keep in my dining room, the other is the SCD-CE775 5-disc changer in my music room).

Now *that's* interesting. The Donnas DualDisc (on some tentacle of the Warner octopus) works fine in my 775. I didn't try the Judas Priest that was visiting this weekend in it (that's the one that didn't work in the laptop).

"CD" side compatibility update:

Sony CE-775 CD/SACD player - Not compatible
Sony laptop - Not compatible
Dell Dimension 8300 PC - Not compatible
Mac mini - Not compatible
HP laptop - Compatible

Whew -- good thing one out of the four PCs in the house worked, so I could make a CD-R copy I could actually listen to. What a joke.

So what exactly is the problem with these? Is it that they are too thick? Or is there some other issue?

I guess I'm surprised the thickness matters that much, as our library always used to (and probably still does) cover every disc with a layer of packing tape with some anti-theft strips below it. Never had a problem!
