The RIAA curve doesn't exist on tape. PERIOD. If there were, and you played it back "flat", you'd essentially hear no bass.

The RIAA curve is applied in the cutting electronics.

I am going to check into this again for the facts as far as *when* the RIAA EQ is applied to the tape, but there has been alot of hubub as far as CD mastering goes that if you don't have the original multi-track tape in hand, you have a stereo, EQ'd dub ready for vinyl pressing. Which explains all those early poor sounding CD's.

This has become a pretty good topic however despite being WAY off the original title of the topic....

I do however recall reading somewhere that the RIAA curve was only present in the phono preamp section to recover what was left out of the vinyl pressing to cram more grooves on the plastic. Less Bass = more room for cutting....

Again, the RIAA curve is *never* applied to a tape. Strictly in the cutting electronics.

When people talk about "tapes EQ'd for LP" or "LP copy tapes", it *generally* means this...

The chain for a recording looks something like this (ignoring mono recordings, anyway):

multitrack session tape -> (mixing) -> stereo mix tape -> (mastering) -> LP/CD cutting

Well, rather than master that stereo mix tape over and over for each LP cutting, often a copy tape would be made with that mastering:

... -> (mastering) -> LP copy tape

At any rate, while a lot of early CDs sound like garbage, there are plenty more that sound far better than anything available today.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE UPDATE: With June almost half gone [or "half started" for the "cup full/cup empty"-inclined out there] we've got our work cut out for us if we are to reach our goal of ***THREE DIGITS****. Membership, while having swelled to 63 in the past 10 days, is still far short of our goal.

NOTICE: To further encourage the literally tens and tens of lurkers out there to finally take the plunge and sign up, LUKE HAS DESIGNED A COOL FUCKING LOGO. You can see the "cool fucking logo" at the top of this and all pages! Just one more reason to make Luke.dot.pac.com.forums.pac.org.org your "home away from home." :D :D :D

Sorry, Patrick, but Ed's already got dibs on that one.

Darn, I just passed 69. Now I'll have to wait until 100.

Can we make it like the "Milestones" section in Time, and also note whenever a member gets arrested?

Wow. Tough break, Ryan, to have just passed the "69" milestone prior to the inauguration of the Milestones Forum. Don't despair, though. You'll be at 100 soon enough.

Aren't there two new girl members (Carrie and Ryan's "friend")?

Apologies. And that gets me to thinking. So as not to offend our new female membership, it might not be a bad idea were Xenu "O Great One" so informed of female membership so as to prevent another profanity-peppered post [PPP].

Trust me, Thesia wouldn't care.

BTW, she's been holed up down in Harrodburg nearly all the time lately working on outdoor theater, and I'm not sure they even have computers down there, so she's been quiet. I'll bug her to be more active when she has more downtime.

There's a thread on ass-kissing posts over at sh.tv right now.

Interesting.
