comparing SACD to CD

Postby krabapple » Thu Dec 09, 2004 3:49 pm

the Tago Mago SACD arrived yesterday..I played the SACD layer, sounds pretty good to me, but haven't compared it to the Spoon CD. This gives me an opportunity to ask, what would be the best way to objectively compare (i.e. measure) the 2-ch SACD to its CD counterparts? Since SACD can only be captured to computer via analog input (whereas CDs can be ripped from from the disc), the way I have done it in he past is to play *both* the SACD layer, and whatever CD I'm comparing it to, via analog outs, and
digitize them on computer. While this method levels the field somewhat, it has its own pbuilt-in assumptions abotu the equivalence of output stages for SACD and CD.

Your thoughts? How would you do such comparisons?

Yeah, and you're also converting the SACD to PCM that way, which horrifies SACD fans, though for the purposes of objective comparisons it shouldn't matter much.

I've always done it the way you describe, and just hoped the output stages match up. I guess if you had a test tone SACD/CD hybrid you could calibrate the input level for each.
