Another round of mini-LPs from Japan, again with unique mastering. Here's the info from Who's/Two's Missing:

"Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue from The Who featuring the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players) and using 2011 DSD remaster based on the US analog master (subject to change). The cardboard sleeve faithfully replicates the US first press LP, which comes with a serial-numbered label card. Part of an eleven-album The Who SHM-CD cardboard sleeve reissue series featuring albums "Odds And Sodds +12," "Original Soundtrack Tommy," "The Who By Numbers +3," "Who Are You +5," "The Kids Are Alright," "Original Soundtrack Quadrophenia," "Face Dances +5," "It's Hard +4," "The Singles +9," "Who's Missing & Two's Missing +9," and "BBC Sessions +8.""

In the case of Who's/Two's Missing, the 2 disc set has the 2 original albums, plus Doctor, Doctor, Someone's Coming, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Baby Don't You Do It, and Call Me Lightning from Rarities, Postcard, I Don't Even Know Myself and Eyesight To The Blind from the JPN Then & Now bonus CD and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from Magic Bus.

The other albums will be the original albums in their original mixes followed by the '90s bonus tracks. Not sure if BBC (with the Best Buy bonus disc) will be remastered, or exactly how Who's/Two's Missing will be tackled in terms of source selection. Also not yet sure if The Singles will simply be a copy of what was used for the SHM-SACD or not.

Damn those Japanese and their expensive CDs!

Odds & Sods - "2011 DSD remaster based on the UK analog master"

"Includes original mix versions of "Summertime Blues," "My Way," "Cousin Kevin Model Child," early mix version of "Young Man Blues," and full-length version of "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand." *All of them are the world's first version."

Apparently Young Man Blues is either the take from the '98 O&S or yet another alternate take.

Who's/Two's Missing - "2011 DSD remaster based on the US analog master"

"Includes tracks "I'm a Boy" from "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy," "Baby Don't Do It (the world's first full-length ver.)," the world's first original mixed version of "Fortune Teller" and "Melancholia," and "Call Me Lightning (mixed version without lead guitar).""

It will be interesting to see what exactly Baby Don't You Do It is. Call Me Lightning must be the version from Magic Bus (at least the CD; not sure what's on the LP).

BBC - "original master"

"Includes a bonus disc with seven songs released only at BEST BUY in US and interview."

I believe BBC was not remastered.

I believe most of the odd translations mean original/vintage mixes were used instead of the mixes done in the '90s for the reissues.

Too bad these are so pricey, otherwise I'd be tempted by at least some of them. I also noticed they're re-issuing the My Generation and Quick One boxes at the end of the year -- My Gen is already sold out, and Quick One has one left.

I overlooked the inclusion of Fortune Teller and Melancholia earlier. Those tracks aren't listed in English, but they are in the Japanese track listing:

1.13 - Doctor, Doctor
1.14 - Someone's Coming (US 45)
1.15 - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (UK 45)
1.16 - Fortune Teller
1.17 - Postcard (EP version)
1.18 - Baby Don't You Do It

2.15 - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (US 45)
2.16 - Call Me Lightning
2.17 - Melancholia
2.18 - Eyesight To The Blind (alternate vocal)
2.19 - Don't Even Know Myself (EP version)

One can only hope.

I think I'm going to break down and get O&S and WM/TM. And It's Hard, just to further my quixotic quest for a decent-sounding version of the original mix (if that's possible). The rest don't look worth the $$$.

Oh, and seeing it here reminds me: do you know why they left "Melancholia" off the Sell Out deluxe?

Yeah...it didn't fit in the first place. It was a Who's For Tennis track (mid '68), not recorded around the time of the rest of the Sell Out stuff. It should be interesting to see what this mix is.

I ended up ordering 6 - Singles, Who's/Two's, O&S, WBN, WAY and Face Dances. I figure those are the ones that have unique stuff. Maybe I'll pick up more later. I've got an MCA CD of the It's Hard original mix...sounds fine to me.

I honestly don't know why I care, but I don't like the way the MCA sounds. I had the WB target, too, and it was crappy as well. (Just dull and flat-sounding.) The remix is better, but I hate the remix. So we'll see.

I can't bring myself to get FD, WAY and WBN for different mixes of the bonus tracks, especially WBN. Though if No Road Romance has a different drum track with Moon, that could be worthwhile.

Re: It's Hard - I don't know. The MCA might have a small upper midrange peak that could possibly be tamed a bit, but for the most part to me it just sounds like a Glyn Johns production, for better or worse.

It will be interesting to see how WBN and WAY compare to the original CDs. I still wonder what MFSL used for a source for WAY.

If these actually sound *good*, I'd be tempted to get WBN as well, though the old MCA sounds OK to me (and the remix of that is inoffensive). I'm content with the MFSL of WAY (hate the remix). For FD, I'm cooler than everyone with my MoFi vinyl. 8)

IGOTMINE.

Astley credited on everything for tape research and mastering. Very nice packaging as is usual for these things. O&S in particular is well done, with the die-cut sleeve. I'll bet WBN is a nice piece with the textured cover.

Playing O&S right now, and my first impression (without rigorous comparison) is that it's still a bit goosed but it doesn't seem as painful as the '98 disc. "Naked Eye" is playing right now, and if there's any NR it's very minimal. Don't know if any of the fuckups from the '98 have been fixed. "Leaving Here" seems as loud as the '98 disc. I'll actually compare 'em eventually, but I'm lazy.

(Edited to add: I don't hear any double-tracking on YMB, just some reverb.)

Oh, and It's Hard sounds a bit cleaner and clearer than the old MCA CD (unscientific first impression is more top end and/or a better source), but still pretty limp. Ah, well.

Haven't sampled WM/TM yet.

Argh, I'm weak. I had some Xmas money burning a hole in my pocket, so I ordered WAY, WBN and FD as long as they were still in stock. I couldn't bring myself to order Singles for $45, even though it has the FIRST REMASTERED VERSION OF "RELAY" THAT'S NOT CROSSFADED.

Goddammit.
