Looking for DVDA-Rs of Quad reels

Postby Jeff T. » Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:52 am

I have an extensive list of DTS titles on CDR. Most are Quad Reel to Reel conversions to DTS on CDR. A few are the DTS issued titles now out of print. And then there is the odd DVD soundtrack converted to DTS on CDR.

I've got Chicago (II) on DTS, but the last time I tried it the CD-R really didn't want to rip. I should probably do something with that before it stops working completely...

Yeah, try ripping on different read drive(s), I usually get success with repeated trys.

I actually bought Chicago II in DVD-A back when it was new. I did grab about 10 DVD-As and 2 or 3 SACDs as they were found a cheap promos still in shrink.

The stereo mix is well regarded on that title, bringing out smoother sound than the originals ever had.

I've got a stereo CD dub of the DVD-A. It still sounds strange, albeit in a different way than the original stereo mix. Almost as if they overcompensated for the odd recording.

The DTS CD is of course the quad mix. IIRC taken from a quad 8-track.

I can't listen to DTS converted from a Q8, that is why I have many QRs or Q4s as some call them. I need to hear them from R2R conversion.

Anyway, I just has a semi breakthrough in personal back-ups of DVD-As.

I dropped in Deep Purple's Machine Head on DVD-A into my computer Pioneer drive, selected DVD Shrink to copy disc, and it copied the darn thing. So I dropped this DVD copy into my Denon DVD player and expected it to lock up after 30 seconds or mute sound anyway. Guess what? The disc played in stereo and 5.1.

Turns out that is the VTS folder has audio tracks in it, then it will copy and make a playable 5.1 DVD disc. It will just not contain the higher rez PCM tracks. I tried Chicago II, as well as Al Green hits, no go with them, they copied and played with no sound tracks. Because those discs have all audio written to Audio TS folders (not VTS) which are not copied by Shrink. Then tried REM - Automatic for th People, this one played back DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, but again no high rez. So at least I have playable 5.1 discs copied out of these bastards.

Ok, then I extracked all files from these discs including the Audio TS forders, and tried assembling a ISO image, but it turns out these images are over the single layer limit, and therefor dual layer discs would be required.

Bottom line, I think DVD-A disc can now be cracked wide open with DVDFab5 which is a later gen ripper. If one does a full disc ISO copy, and selects "clone" mode, it will copy the discs including watermarks, and then you can burn a clone that should read as an original. See, these DVD-A discs were designed and set up before DL DVD-Rs were on the market, and so since you cannot make copies that are shrunk down to single layer and expect them to play, they must be on DL media and copied as clones.

Since the general population has moved on from DVD-A and SACD for that matter, nobody has continued trying to crack these mothers and print them to DVD-R. But I am still on the case. And now it seems that some discs will at least let you copy the DD and DTS audio portions as I have just done. And these disc play flawlessly on my Denon DVD-A player.

Hello,

I realize it has been a long long time since anyone has posted here, but I have some newly acquired quad mixes and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me acquire Doobie Brothers Stampede.

I am the original software developer of Pro Tools and have access to a few quad mixes that others might not have access to.

If people are not comfortable with trading I totally respect that. But, if people are open to it. let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for registering and posting. I am original poster in this thread and have accumulated a fairly good collection of vintage quad and transferred to DTS and DVD-A & DVD-V, "conversions" as we call them out there in collectorsville.

We've quite comfortable with talking trading (unissued and / or long oop stuff) in this forum, but all details seem to happen in private messages rather than in the forums.

I'm sending you a pm now so that you can email me directly. I believe I have the Stampede quad reel to reel on DVD.
