Sounds interesting. I'm a fan too, maybe not a diehard fan, but he's definitely one of the greats.

As noted, I'm definitely biased. Dion could read the phone book and I'd probably plunk down 15 bucks for it. But, that said, this is exactly the kind of record he should be making at this point in his career.

In many ways, it conjures up the kind of acoustic blues (albeit sung by a guy 35 years older) that were sprinkled on his early 70's albums - stuff like "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover", "Sweet Pea," and "Jammed-Up Blues". Whereas Sit Down Old Friend from 1970 was just him and his Martin guitar (w/ the occasional second acoustic overdubbed by him), this record repeats that simple formula, adding a little percussion along the way as well.

It's a nice sort of full circle from that period in my opinion. Naturally, critics will try and compare this to the recent Cash/Rubin albums. But to me that's a bit overly simplistic. This record wasn't made as some sort of contrived attempt to re-sell him to a larger audience (not that there's anything wrong with that), but rather it's just a self-made, small-scale "valentine" to the stuff that's been in his blood forever. After all, he's been doing traditional blues in one form or another since his Columbia mid-60's days.

Last but not least, he still sounds great - vocally and guitar-wise. In the mid-90's when he formed the Little Kings with Scott Kempner and the dudes from the Del-Lords, it gave him a creative outlet to play in a club-based rock band (sounding like the Clash meets the Sopranos). I'm hoping, at the very least, he takes this current album and does something live on a similar scale. The oldies/casino concerts can pay the bills and make that audience happy...but this music deserves something more.

As fate would have it, he's playing a show at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in NYC on Jan. 9th to promote the album.

If things were a little different for me right about now, I'd probably be there in a minute - maybe even a New York minute.
