What's this 'dourness and reluctance' rebop? I perceive Luke as simply being *exasperated* if anything -- symbolized thus:

The way I recall it, this place was started as a less-restrictive *alternative* to discuss many of the sorts of things discussed on SHtv...not specifically as a place to *wail on* SHtv. Though that's fun too, as we've seen.

Now if "Luvmusic" (who may very well be Grant with a spell checker) wishes to come forward as the virtual equivalent of a bookburner, then that is his choice -- and an attitude which I sincerely hope that no one here shares. I really would hate to see Luke cave into this zealotry and delete the Snakepit content. I and many others have put a lot of work into that, and even if the quality ratio is not exactly 100%, there are some memorable things there (Beatle haiku thread, etc.).

luvmusic is an idiot.
I don 't yet see Luke *deleting* the Rancid Snakepit -- despite Grant's recommendation.

Luke, do let me know if you wish to be rid of it, because I will be happy to take that content off your hands. I just do not want to see everyone's work consigned to oblivion. Even if you don't like it, that's no reason to burn anything.

Hear, hear.

Yes...but IMO, that incident put Luke and Amy one step closer to being "sick of it all." And Amy's post would have made that clear to anyone who was "watching and waiting."

Two days after Amy's post, luvmusic shows up. A day or so later, Rantz follows. In all the months that the Snakepit has been active, the only SHtv folks who have tussled with us have been Prix and Grant IIRC. Two more showing up, when they showed up, and setting up residence as Snakepit trolls, can't be a coincidence.

Did anyone else get the impression that Rantz was digging in like he was a man on a mission? I can't remember Prix or Grant ever taking the Snakepit that seriously.

Maybe I'm giving those guys too much credit. But it sure seems as if they struck while the iron was hot.

Hahahahahaha! Hey I think I suggested something like this many months ago! Oh, but I guess this is also another plain WRONG idea from a possibly not bright person, eh?

Man! I missed the fireworks. I've been busy with my Minuteman brethren trying to keep the land pure and white!

Whoo! :D Hopefully it has a url that will come up when "Steve Hoffman" is googled!

I also would like to thank Luke for hosting the Snakepit. I'm not sure why you chose to lock it up, but obviously it is your right to do so. I like discussion forums that are free for all knock down slugfests as long as the verbal jousts are creative and laugh inducing. But that is just my personal taste.

I think the real fireworks were over "there." I can imagine the emails that were giddily flying back and forth.

Yeah Grant, brilliant idea. Kinda like when the RIAA shut down Napster's centralized server and it metastized into the P2P juggernaut that we have today. You, my friend, are a seer. Like Nostradamus. Or maybe Nostradumbass. :D

Note - my above analysis is in no way meant to cast aspersions on Luke, who has been a kindly and generous host to a bunch of mouth breathing malcontents.

COLA, keep us posted.

I strongly hope that the Snakepit content will either stay here or find a home elsewhere. So much of it is far too funny to just be retconned out of existence.

I think that's precisely it.

While it's pretty sad that a half-assed troll attack was the last straw, that's all it was.

Gloating isn't the hallmark of a "bright" person. Gloating about something that hasn't happened ("deletion"), even less so.

I didn't read much of this Rantz stuff, but I'm curious how the concept of a "Snakepit Troll" is even possible. A troll is basically someone who types bullshit designed just to get a reaction, and that would pretty much describe about 80% of the content in the Snakepit. How do you troll a forum that's filled with trolling to begin with? Or is it considered trolling simply to venture an opinion different than the predominant view in the Snakepit that SH.TV sucks?

I only read the Snakepit sporadically... I enjoyed the occasional behind-the-SH-scenes gossip, discussion of the most idiotic posts there, as well as the posting of content that had been deleted from SH.TV. On the other hand, I found most of the parody posts to be boring and unfunny, the personal insults directed at Hoffman to be crude and excessive, and the macho obscenity-laden insult contests that occasionally erupted when someone tried to defend SH.TV to be quite tedious. I tended to read what I liked and ignore the rest. I'll miss the Snakepit if it is gone permanently I guess.

But isn't a troll also someone who constantly thread craps, scolds the other posters, and has an agenda to close down the whole thread section?

Who is gloating? I'm not. I do think he made a step in the right direction.

I still think that the snakepit brought his forum down. Luke says he would love to shut it down. Well, it's his forum. He can delete it any time he wants.'

Although that person on one of the snakepit threads was sticking up for me in a backhanded way, he doesn't know me well enough to judge if I am bright or not. None of you do either.

Yeah I agree that deliberate thread crapping is trolling. Not sure I'd agree that scolding posters or advocating closure of the forum (obnoxious though they may be) constitute trolling. I guess I define trolling as posting to get a negative reaction or cause disruption rather than to express an opinion. Advocating forum closure would only be trolling if the person was only taking that position to stir shit, rather than because they actually believed it.
