McCartney FAME CDs

Postby Xenu » Mon Aug 04, 2003 2:55 pm

Anybody have any input on these? I saw some in a store a few days ago, and I figure that I might as well own Macca II and Wild Life in *some* form. Thing is, I'm suspicious of these being "Bowie RCA"-esque...ie. I can see what people see in them, but for me the cons outweigh any benefits.

ARE these as good as reported?

The pre-PMC Collection UK version of Macca's catalogue, as far as I can tell. A separate series, notable for its CD-FA prefixes, and apparently the best non-DCC iteration so far.

Are these Cds distinguished by a cover like this ?

Those are the Paul McCartney Collection - PMC. Ie, UK remastered versions. The ones David speaks of predate those.

Thanks Luke !

And, when you get a chance, could you tell me what "notable for its CD-FA prefixes, and apparently the best non-DCC iteration so far" means ?

Er...

I believe CD-FA is just the catalog number prefix. Like CDP, MCAD, etc...

The other line just means they are (supposedly) the best sounding versions other than the DCCs.

Well, I noted the CD-FA prefix, because...well, that seems like a damn good way to identify 'em (same with the CDP prefix and the Zappa EMI CDs).

Nobody's heard these?

A friend picked up a pair of them in the UK. I'll be picking up one and a dub of the other early next week, and I'll give you a report. I think one of the titles is "Venus and Mars," but I don't remember which the other one was.

Dave,

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on this, but time has been short. I got a copy of the Fame version of "London Town" and a cdr of "Venus and Mars." Both of them sound pretty great to me, although the original recording of VAM is, as I was led to believe, not all that good, and so my copy does suffer in comparison with LT.

LT has a rich, warm sound, and I find it very satisfying. Sounds like a flat transfer and maybe even from the first generation tape. Whatever it is, it's worth having, I think. "With a Little Luck" sounds much better than the version on Wingspan. Can't compare it to other cd versions or the vinyl (I don't have any other versions). When I compare it with the McCartney DCC's that I have I can imagine how much better it could be, but in the absense of a Hoffman version of this record I'm glad to have the Fame. Haven't had a chance to A?B the VAM with Wingspan, but my memory tells me it's also preferable. Depends upon your tolerance for that shimmery modern mastering style, I suppose.

I hope that helps.

Louis

Uh...yes. I think I'd say that's a positive recommendation. I can add, by the way, that a cdr of a Japanese version of "Wings Greatest Hits" of similar vintage sounds almost as good as the Fame "London Town."

I'm not sure these things are all that easy to find in the US, but I think they're worth looking for. Very good second choices to the DCC's (for the titles that have DCC versions, for the others they may be the only versions worth listening to).

Anyone compare these to the old US Capitol or Columbia CDs?
