Are you talking about Lyman, Jon's roommate from the early 1980s? I think he moved out and moved on once he found out that Jon only had a thing for Liz. Once he departed, the strip was never the same.
I have no idea if you're right about Lyman, but he did have a great porn moustache.

I could never forgive him for abandoning Odie like that, just to go indulge his own perverted desires in a bathhouse somewhere.
