Blue Ranger charged with cold-blooded double homicide

Former “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” actor Skylar Deleon and his wife Jennifer Henderson Deleon were ordered to stand trial for the murder a couple who were allegedly killed for their 55-foot yacht in California. Police say the Deleons handcuffed Thomas Hawks and wife Jackie to the yacht’s 66-pound anchor and threw them overboard.

CALIFORNIA: A former child actor and his wife have been ordered to stand trial for the murder of a wealthy Californian couple who, prosecutors say, were tied to the anchor of their yacht and thrown overboard alive, never to be seen again.

Orange County Superior Court Judge John Conley ordered 26-year-old Skylar Deleon, who once appeared in the Power Rangers TV series, and his wife, 24-year-old Jennifer Henderson Deleon, to stand trial for the murders after a two-day preliminary hearing in Santa Ana, south of Los Angeles.

Also charged in the case, which baffled police for months as they searched for the missing couple, were a member of the Crips street gang and a prison guard who are accused of helping carry out a conspiracy to steal the 17-metre luxury yacht "Well Deserved".

"It's haunting to think these nice, loving people were trying to hold their breaths as they sank to the bottom of the ocean," Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy said during the hearing. "This is as cold-blooded as it gets."

Prosecutors say Deleon came up with the plot after spotting the yacht for sale in a boating magazine last November and meeting owners Thomas Hawks, 57, and his 47-year-old wife Jackie.

He is accused of enlisting the help of 40-year-old gang member John Fitzgerald Kennedy and ex-jailer Alonso Machain, 21, to carry out the murder on Nov. 15, 2004. Machain has since confessed to police and will be tried separately.

Attorneys for the Deleons rejected the charges and during the hearing attacked the credibility of Machain, who is expected to be a star witness for the prosecution.

A police detective testified during the hearing that Deleon and his then-pregnant wife posed as interested buyers and convinced the Hawks to take the yacht on a test run.

Miles off the coast of Newport Beach, prosecutors say, Thomas and Jackie Hawks were attacked with a stun gun, handcuffed and gagged with duct tape. After signing over power of attorney to one assailant, they were tied to the boat's 30kg anchor and thrown overboard.

The couple was reported missing by relatives and police were led to the Deleons, who produced a bill of sale for the yacht and the power of attorney. Authorities believe the bill of sale was falsified.

Police also found that Deleon had unsuccessfully tried to access the Hawks' bank account in Arizona using the power of attorney.

Deleon has also been charged with another murder in 2003, of a man he met while in jail.

I guess you don't want to cross paths with the Blue Ranger and a time-travelin' evil JFK.

That's amazingly vile, right out the Sopranos or something...

Isn't it odd that we struggle with the (alleged) fact that a former TV actor can also be a homicidal psychopath? It's as if we think that anyone stable enough to land a part in a TV show can't be capable of such brutality (which will -- no doubt -- be used by Mr. Deleon's defense attorneys during the trial).

I'm still totally stunned by the normality of the public life of the BTK killer.

I'm just astonished by anyone capable of such acts. I don't care if they're famous, infamous, un-famous...

If anything, I'm surprised more actors aren't psychopaths!

I was exploring what is perceived to be the "shocking" element of this story. Part of it is the crime, and part of it is the fact that Mr. Deleon is an ex-Power Ranger. Wouldn't you agree that the media are playing up that aspect? I do agree, though, that there is no *logical* reason to think that an ex-Power Ranger is less likely to commit such a crime.

Because of the cutthroat nature of Hollywood, many of them probably are. They're just not homicidal psychopaths.

Yeah, they probably are playing that up. Kind of like any white person murdered in NYC will get more attention/headlines than a minority, I guess.

Logically and objectively speaking, there's no reason why being once employed as a Power Ranger will somehow make you less capable of any crime. They're just actors, just because they do a kids' show doesn't mean they're gonna be Mr. Rogers. It's just weird, is all, like Pee Wee masturbating in a porn theater, or one of the Teletubbies doing kinky, bizarre erotica in the U.K.

Granted, none of that comes close to the shit THIS guy did, but it's still weird.
