Protocol for picking up men in airport bathroom:

1) Stare furtively
2) Play footsie
3) Waggle fingers suggestively

4a) Enjoy sex act
or
4b) Get arrested, flash Senate ID pathetically, become laughingstock

Optional: Enter guilty plea then "regret" it

Brilliant!

Judge denies Craig motion to revoke plea

I don't get this:

Craig has maintained his innocence and said his actions in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport bathroom June 11 were misconstrued by the police officer who arrested him.

The officer said Craig had looked into his bathroom stall, and tapped his foot and moved his hand under the divider in a way that suggested he was looking for a sexual partner.

Craig denied that in an interview with the officer after his arrest. But he pleaded guilty on Aug. 8. He later said he "panicked" in entering his plea, believing that it would keep the matter quiet.

He "panicked" after 2 months?

The Genius of Larry Craig, Senator
By Josh Marshall

You've heard the news. Sen. Larry Craig isn't resigning after all. He'll keep plugging away in the Senate until January 2009.

For the moment at least he says he's not going to run for reelection. (I put the odds of his getting into the presidential at about three-to-one.) But really, it's pretty obvious why he's chosen not to seek another term in the senate. If he's in the senate how can he found Craig & Associates LLC, Specialists in Crisis Communications.

Let's face it, Larry Craig is demonstrably the shrewdest and most deft master of crisis communications in American history, quite possibly since the early days of the Roman Republic.

Let's review, news breaks that Craig, a social conservative and strong opponent of gay rights, got nabbed for propositioning a man for sex in a public restroom -- a misdemeanor to which he later pleaded guilty. That's just a bad news day.

So Craig's fellow Republicans basically do everything short of physically forcing him to resign. He "resigns". Only it's not a resignation. Rather, it's a rather ingenious ploy to let the temperature ease off on the story, a post-dated resignation. Then it's not a resignation. He's going to fight the guilty plea -- something of a novelty in the annals of jurisprudence. He'll stay in office if he can get his plea withdrawn. And now he can't get his guilty plea withdrawn so, well, too bad. He's staying anyway.

I don't know whether it was all intentional. But it was ingenious. Who could have thought he would survive this?

Late Update: TPM Reader DH thinks Craig's a shrewd betting man too ...

The genius of Craig’s move today is in calling the Republicans’ bluff on Ethics Committee hearings: Does the Republican leadership really want televised hearings on gay sex in public, involving one of their own, as the AP is reporting is “virtually certain”? Didn’t think so. Who’s taking odds that those hearings are cancelled somehow, some way?

Sen. Craig should make sure he doesn't fly in any small planes.

Just sayin'.

From today's WaPo:

Yesterday, Craig said part of the reason he is staying in the Senate is his "important committee assignments that are valuable to Idaho," including positions on the Appropriations panel and the Energy and Natural Resources panel. If he were to resign now, he said, "a replacement would be highly unlikely to obtain these posts." He was not present yesterday evening for a vote on an appropriations bill.

Just curious: have any Dems raised a peep about this (in a "he should resign" fashion)?

I haven't seen any quoted. I think they're content to let the Republicans take the stage on this one.

The Democrats don't want any part of this scandal. Sitting back with popcorn is the best thing they can do:

1. The GOP objected loudly to this homosexual act while turning a blind eye to Rep. Vitter's conduct with female prostitutes. This shines a big, bright light on the party's collective hypocrisy and homophobia, which won't help them with moderates in next year's presidential election.

2. If Craig resigns now, the Republican Governor of Idaho would surely appoint another GOPer to the seat. This person would then be the easy favorite to win election in '08. However, if Craig stays through his term, that seat could be in play next November. A Democratic win there would be a completely unexpected coup.

Sen. Craig loses bid to withdraw guilty plea
His lawyer had argued evidence of soliciting sex at bathroom was lacking
BREAKING NEWS

[AP] updated 17 minutes ago
MINNEAPOLIS - Idaho Sen. Larry Craig has lost his latest attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in a Minneapolis airport men’s room sex sting.

A three-judge panel of the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected the Republican’s bid to toss out his disorderly conduct conviction.

Craig was arrested in June 2007 in a Minneapolis airport bathroom stall by an undercover officer who said the senator solicited sex.
He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and paid a fine, but changed his mind after word of his arrest became public. Craig insisted he was innocent, but the case effectively ended his political career.

Craig’s attorney argued before the appeals court this September that there was insufficient evidence for any judge to find him guilty. Prosecutors said his guilty plea should stand.
