Rod Stewart's Catalog Breeds Musical

Rod Stewart's greatest hits are coming to the stage in a new London musical, "Tonight's the Night," that will open on the West End in the fall. The show at the Victoria Palace Theater will feature some 22 songs from the 58-year-old artist's catalog, including "Sailing," "Maggie May," and "D'ya Think I'm Sexy."

"It's astounding," Stewart says of the show. At the same time, the singer expresses no interest in writing a show from scratch as colleagues Elton John and Randy Newman have. "I don't have the patience for that," he said.

"Tonight's the Night" is co-produced by Arnold Stiefel, Stewart's manager since 1982, and Phil McIntyre, the pop promoter turned impresario who has a current West End hit in "We Will Rock You," scored to the music of the rock group Queen.

Boasting a cast of 36, "Tonight's the Night" starts previews Oct. 15 and opens Nov. 6. The musical's writer-director is English comedian and playwright Ben Elton.

As previously reported, Stewart is working on a new album of standards, due in the fall from J Records. J head Clive Davis said the set will include such songs as "Stardust" and "As Time Goes By" and will be produced "appropriately to the feel" of each selection, perhaps with guest vocalists.
