Linksys WRT54G vs. WRT54GS

Postby Patrick M » Thu Jul 29, 2004 6:47 pm

Anyone have one of these? Luke?

Is the S model identical to the other except for this vague "SpeedBooster" thing? I'm not clear if this SpeedBooster thing requires Linksys network adapters or not. It wouldn't do anything for increasing throughput from a broadband connection anyway, right?

I just got the WRT54G this past weekend, actually. Seems to work fairly well. I've got two 802.11g laptops, one with a Linksys card and the other with a built in Broadcom chip. I had some trouble getting the Linksys card to work with WPA, but it's fine now.

As far as I know "SpeedBooster" is only compatible with Linksys "SB" products. I know Netgear (among others) has another "108" technology out there that sits on top of g. I wouldn't put much stock into any of them, but I honestly haven't checked them out much. Tom's might have something to say about it. Or TechTV.

I don't know about the WRT54GS, but the WRT54G uses Linux, and as such is open source. I know people have written new firmware that adds more features, but I haven't checked any of it out yet.

I currently have 9 extra Linksys wall mounting plates siting around

How much did you pay for the WRT54G and where did you get it? Newegg has it for $70, before $10 MIR. BB has it for $80, then $10 IR, then $10 MIR, so it's a wash, except for tax.

I found this review of the S model, which talks about the open firmware:

This router is not only easy to set up, Linksys went open source on the firmware (it is running a modified Linux OS) and there are a number of groups that have come up with firmware modifications that will give you up to a 300% increase in range! And for those that want to really put it to hard work, you can mod it for outdoor use! (see shared link) The shared link points to an article that begins with this quote: "The Linksys WRT54G and GS 802.11g access point is arguably one of the most customizable on the planet." Wonderful wireless ap whether you want to modify it or just use it stock.

BB. Didn't get the rebates, but went back on Sunday for them.

Guess that one is open source too:

It looks like the GS is a bit faster...how much that matters is up to you:
