OS X SCSI/Kernel Help needed

Postby lukpac » Mon Dec 08, 2003 6:54 pm

I just posted this over on Apple's support forums, but I figured I'd give it a shot here too...

First, some system info:

B&W G3/400 Mhz (rev 1)/384 MB/OS X 10.2.8
SCSI cards: Adaptec 2930B and 2940U2B
CD-RW drive: Plextor PX-W1210S
CD-R drive: Panasonic CW-7502-B

The Plextor drive is installed in place of (internally) the stock IDE CD-ROM the computer shipped with. Burning and reading data both work fine regardless of what SCSI card I have it connected to, but I always get a kernel panic when attempting digital audio extraction (DAE), regardless of the card. I've tried DAE in both iTunes and Toast. DAE works flawlessly in OS 9, as well as in OS X using the IDE CD-ROM. The kernel panics also occur when attempting DAE with the Panasonic CD-R (again which works fine in OS 9).

There are no other devices on the 2930B card, and the only other device on the 2940U2B card is the factory hard drive (last device on chain). Removing the 2930B card altogether does not help, nor does changing the SCSI ID and termination on the CD drives. Changing the SCSI cable does not help either. I've also tried removing the two memory modules I've added - no luck. Several different firmware revisions were tried with the CD-RW; none fixed anything.

The 2940U2B card has the 1.2 firmware, which I believe is the latest available. The firmware on the 2930B card cannot be updated.

Here is the kernel panic itself, which appears to be almost identical regardless of what card the drive is on:

-----

In addition, a friend of mine has a G4/400 Mhz running 10.2.8 and the same Plextor drive, and he doesn't have any problems. The only notable differences are he has a 2930CU card and runs his drive externally.

Any help would be much appreciated!
