AMSTERDAM--Dutch Philips Electronics says it has developed a new technology with Japan's Mitsubishi Kagaku Media that nearly doubles the storage capacity of data on recordable DVD discs.

Philips, Europe's largest maker of consumer electronics and lighting, said Friday its new dual-layer technology raised the capacity of recordable DVDs (DVD+R) to 8.5GB from 4.7GB for single-layer DVD discs.

The company said in a statement users would be able to record four hours of DVD-quality video or 16 hours of VHS-quality video, without the need to turn over the discs.

Philips said it would demonstrate the new technology at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show, which will be held from Oct. 7 to 11 in Makuhari, near Tokyo.

Mitsubishi Kagaku Media is a unit of Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., Japan's largest chemical firm.

Wonder if these will be compatible with standard DVD decks. If so, that could remove the biggest hurdle to pirate DVDs -- not being able to dupe a dual-layer disc. It'll be interesting to see if the studios put up a fight.

Ryan,

They probably own a piece of Phillips, and or, that Japanese company, and will, in public, deplore piracy, besides, provide blanks for it.

Great...another reason to put off my DVD+R purchase.

This'll definitely be the killer ap for recordable DVD platforms. I just hope the blanks aren't prohibitively expensive.
