Does Microsoft Update actually work?

Go ahead laugh, but it's a serious question.
Between my regular soon to be retired desktop (Pentium 3) and my wife's laptop (Pentium 4), I drank the Kool-Aid and tried to use this to gather my updates. When I go in manually to download, all it does chart "Searching for Updates" and not much else. I let it spin for 45 minutes on my desktop before killing it, did the same on the laptop.
Both are running XP SP 2 (Home on the desktop, Professional on the laptop). I totally get the hiccup on the desktop as it moves closer to being technically obsolete but the stall on the laptop confuses me to say the least. I searched around and can't really seem to find a clear cut answer.
Anyone else have or seen this issue??
