Keyes calls Obama abortion views 'slaveholder's position'

By Mike Robinson

Associated Press

CHICAGO - A day after jumping into the Illinois Senate race, two-time presidential candidate Alan Keyes ripped into Democratic rival Barack Obama, saying his views on abortion were "the slaveholder's position."

The conservative former diplomat said Obama's vote against a bill that would have outlawed a form of late-term abortion denied unborn children their equal rights. Both candidates - one an outspoken conservative and the other a favorite of party liberals - are black.

"I would still be picking cotton if the country's moral principles had not been shaped by the Declaration of Independence," Keyes said. He said Obama "has broken and rejected those principles - he has taken the slaveholder's position."

Obama, who has been basking in national celebrity since delivering the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, suggested Keyes was outside the moderate mainstream of state Republicans.

Asked specifically about the phrase slaveholder's position, Obama said Keyes "should look to members of his own party to see if that's appropriate if he's going to use that kind of language."

Keyes, who is from Maryland and lost two Senate races there, on Sunday accepted the GOP nomination to replace primary winner Jack Ryan, who dropped out of the race in June over embarrassing sex allegations. Keyes must establish residency in Illinois by Election Day.

Obama said he voted against the late-term abortion ban as a state senator because it contained no exception to protect the life of the mother. He noted that Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and federal Appeals Judge Richard Posner, both appointed by President Ronald Reagan, had voted to strike down laws banning late-term abortions.

Obama said he did not question the sincerity of those deeply concerned about abortion, but he said he believed there were many other issues on the minds of voters.

"As I travel around this state, I don't get asked about gay marriage, I don't get asked about abortion," Obama said. "I get asked, 'How can I find a job that allows me to support my family?' I get asked, 'How can I pay those medical bills without going into bankruptcy?' "

In an interview on WBEZ radio yesterday, Keyes defended his belief that gay marriage was wrong, brushing aside a suggestion from an interviewer that sexual preference might be biologically determined.

"We as human beings cannot assert that our sexual desires cannot be controlled," Keyes said. He said such an assertion would "consign us to the realm of instinctual animal nature - and we are not there."

The race between Keyes and Obama sets up the first U.S. Senate election with two black candidates representing the major parties and all but ensures Illinois will produce only the fifth black U.S. senator in history.

Curse those evil people from Chicago:

Vote Alan Keyes To Get Out From Under Barack Obama's Chicago Thumb

By Lee Zelhart
Aug 9, 2004

I have to do it! I can't sleep, eat, or live with myself if Barack Obama wins the Senate this fall. I am not a bigoted man (Right, I would say person, but that seems less personal and this time of day it's too early to be politically correct.) and feel most of the time leave people alone, but look I gotta go with Alan Keyes (The "new" boy on the block), or else I'm afraid this part of the state will be under the thumb of Chicago for the next generation.

You have to understand one thing...this is Carninal country, not scrubby country. We prefer to live free then live under the rule of the Daly's. We rooted for Big Mac during the race to topple Marris several years ago, not Slammin' Sammy (despite the corked bats of the latter). This part of Illinois is filled with poor, but honest shoeshine boys and...sorry, there I go again.

Look, this is my problem. The way I see it the Daly family in Chicago run the northern part of the state. They have been in power for centuries, or seems like it. They don't care about the bottom part, lower part, or any other part of the state of Illinois. Just as long as they get their money from the Lottery. Springfield is NOT the capital of the state, as far as I'm concerned, it's Chicago.

There's nothing I want from Chicago, not the Scrubbies, the Sox, Bozo the clown, the zoos, the lake, or anything else. I don't like Oprah, either. (Yes, Oprah, I said it...I hate you and I am not a racist, just a normal ordinary American not everyone can like you). Okay, I also don't like Martha Stewart, David Letterman (I don't care if he's from Indiana, he's probably a Scrubbie fan) and G.B.Trudeau. (I also still think John Kerry is one of his charactors.)

Chicago's been cramming Democrats down our throats long enough. I have said it before, there are no Republican's living in Chicago (note: the operative word is LIVING). I worked with a guy who grew up in Chicago and know whereof I speak. Every person I've met from Chicagoland is either brain dead, or not living in Chicago. Nuff said! This is, of course, my opinion. It just seems you get a Democrat elected in this state he owes allegiance to, if not pledges such,to Chicago and to the republic for which they...Huh? Must have fallen asleep again, now where was I?

Oh, yeah! We get tired down here taking orders from "HIS HONOR DA MAYAH OF CHICAGO" Daly. We get tired of dead people in the state voting up there. (Look, I know equal opportunity is good, but come on.) I know the machine's helped do a lot for the state, but the same case can be made for organized...well you know! Maybe it's time I changed...anybody seen a phone booth around here? Semper Fi!

My sig says all that needs to be said about Keyes' candidacy. I'll bet the Illinois Republicans had to dig into the dusty bowels of the Rolodex to come up with his name.

Here's House Speaker Dennis Hastert's comments on the Keyes candidacy. Amazingly, he's not even trying to hide that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel:

"You know, we were down -- we needed to find somebody to run, somebody who wanted to run. And, you know, Alan Keyes wants to run, and I hope he's a good candidate.
