My question isn't if you find them repugnant or not. My question was exactly what power they have to "screw up" the country. Clinton may yet run for president, so she may yet be in a position to do some damage, but today the Democrats couldn't pass anything in the Senate if they wanted to. Moore? He makes movies, not policy. Kennedy? He's a relic in the minority party.

In what way are they "screwing up" America, when they have no ability to implement their agendas?

I can see it two ways, and it depends on the politics of the author.

A liberal might say these people are "screwing up" America because they're too far to the left, causing moderates to move to the right.

A conservative would say that while they have no power, people still listen to them.

In modern America there's plenty of ways for a person to spread their message, accurate or not. We've all seen plenty of examples. A "celebrity" especially can easily find a sounding board for their opinion, regardless of how informed it is, or how many people agree with it.

I'm guessing that the author is conservative, and is trying to show what an influence these people have on the public, despite not having the power to directly shape policy themselves.

Sheep are sheep (or "sheeple") no matter what their politics, and thinking people at either end of the political spectrum will fear "sheeple" at the other end.

How 'left wing' is Hillary Clinton these days?

Depends on your sources.

In that case, Bernard Goldberg is screwing up America.

Random note on this general topic. Someone I work with told me today that the TV show "Commander-In-Chief" was liberal Hollywood's effort to get people to accept the idea of a woman (presumably Hillary, who he said "scares the crap out of me") as President. "They're just trying to get it out into the mainstream -- soften us up!"

Yeah, this meme even came up on the NPR report about the show...a month or so ago.

I love that Hillary Clinton 'scares the crap' out of some people.

But surely the blame has to go to THAT BITCH MARGARET THATCHER.

I was highly amused by the subtext of the "soften us up" remark, but it was more important not to bust out laughing and lose my job.

After looking at that cover, read this:

Jonah Goldberg is a hypocritical putz.

Not to take *too* much away from Hillary, but other than being the wife of a popular Democratic ex-president, how much has she really done to be in the sights of all of these right-wing nutjobs? Are they just that pathetic that they can't do any better?

And Ryan, that link is too damn funny.

Yeah, somehow all the wingers got it in their heads that the hopelessly compromised health-care plan Hillary cooked up was socialist in some way, when it was actually just a mess.

Plus, they're convinced she killed Vince Foster.

Plus, they harbor a grudge over "Travelgate."

And, of course, the whole "Hillary Clinton"/"Hillary Rodham Clinton" thing really toasted their Jockeys.

Let's not forget "Cookiegate," when Hillary said she wasn't a "baking cookies" sort of First Lady, which apparently offended the vast cookie-baking right-wing voting bloc.

Of course, she's a woman, which is a strike right there.

But I think the biggest problem is that she was married to a guy they couldn't tear down. They tried *everything*, and Clinton still left office a popular president. They simply couldn't Swift Boat him. He had an approval rating in the 60s in the middle of Monica mania. The wingers HATED that. And they're afraid that Hillary might be the same way. So they attack every chance they get.

Well, I happen to honestly think that "she's a woman" is one of the stronger condemnations in the eyes of some. She's no subserviant wallflower! No, she's willful, and some people can't stand that. Cue the endless lesbian rumors, et cetera.

On another level, though, there is the sense that she's a consummate politician, and is absolutely shameless about this. I think the idea of an obvious female politician was and is still anethema to some.

IMO, I think Hillary nudges the "sellout" territory so expertly explored by fucks like Lieberman. She can certainly earn my support, but treading a moralistic middle ground isn't the way to do it.

I gotta admit... The best covers adorn books written by right-wing wackos.
