Pentagon celebrates 9/11 with big party

Postby Rspaight » Wed Aug 10, 2005 12:06 pm

Yee-haw.

Here's the website: http://www.asyfreedomwalk.com/

How thoroughly offensive. I wondered how long it would take for 9/11 to become just another excuse to sell used cars. The answer: four years. But I'll admit I'm kind of surprised the Pentagon is the first one into the pool.

But wait, it gets more nauseating. Dig the list of corporate sponsors for the "Dance On The Graves Of The 9/11 Dead" festival:

Stars And Stripes

Pentagon Federal Credit Union

Lockheed Martin

Subway

ABC WJLA-TV Channel 7 and News Channel 8

WTOP Radio Network

Washington Post

Washington Convention & Tourism Corporation

Lockheed Martin? Lockheed Martin?

Sweet Jesus, this really is a big victory lap for the Pentagon and all their cronies. "Thank you, 9/11, for making us powerful beyond the dreams of mortal men!"

Next year, they go nationwide:

Q: Why is DoD organizing this event?
R: Since September 11, 2001, the Pentagon has provided citizens with opportunities to commemorate September 11 in meaningful ways. The America Supports You Freedom Walk is the fourth September 11 commemorative activity sponsored by the DoD. The goal for the 5th anniversary in 2006 is for each state to host a Freedom Walk in order to provide an opportunity for as many citizens as possible to reflect on the importance of freedom.

And country music! And funnel cake! And jugglers and clowns!

I can't wait to see the Burning Towers float, with Miss Bumfuck County Bean Harvest waving from the remains of the Pentagon. And maybe a huge inflatable Osama bin Laden, laughing his ass off.

Pentagon to host 9/11 march, show

BY MICHAEL McAULIFF
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon will hold a massive march and country music concert to mark the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in an unusual announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing yesterday.

"This year the Department of Defense will initiate an America Supports You Freedom Walk," Rumsfeld said, adding that the march would remind people of "the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation."

The march will start at the Pentagon, where nearly 200 people died on 9/11, and end at the National Mall with a show by country star Clint Black.

Word of the event startled some observers. "I've never heard of such a thing," said John Pike, who has been a defense analyst in Washington for 25 years and runs GlobalSecurity.org.

The news also reignited debate and anger over linking Sept. 11 with the war in Iraq.

"That piece of it is disturbing since we all know now there was no connection," said Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq veteran who heads Operation Truth, an anti-administration military booster.

Rieckhoff suggested the event was an ill-conceived publicity stunt. "I think it's clear that their public opinion polls are in the toilet," he said.

Rumsfeld's walk had some relatives of 9/11 victims fuming.

"How about telling Mr. Rumsfeld to leave the memories of Sept. 11 victims to the families?" said Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband in the attacks.

Administration supporters insisted Rumsfeld was right to link Iraq and 9/11, and hold the rally.

"We are at war," said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.). "It's essential that we support our troops."

He also said attacking Iraq was necessary after 9/11. "You do not defeat Al Qaeda until you stabilize the Middle East, and that's not possible as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."

Yeah, but being that much more French/Commie makes her all the more appealing. I loves the forbidden fruit!

Why not international? Perhaps people in other countries would yearn to join in the festivities...during the concert, the Jumbotron could carry a live video feed from various locations in the Middle East, showing "Muslim revelers."

Here's some helpful tips (from the website) for those planning to attend:
For visitor safety, the following items are prohibited during the walk, and at the concert viewing area: real or simulated weapons/ammunition...Mace/pepper spray...fireworks/firecrackers, and laser lights/laser pointers. Backpacks, duffels and bags are allowed but will be subject to screening.

The website didn't mention it, but I'd guess that American young men of a certain ethnic extraction would be advised to stay away as well.

How 'free' will our 'Freedom Walk' be?

There are any number of reasons to find the upcoming "America Supports You Freedom Walk" disconcerting. This is an event, organized by Rumsfeld's Defense Department, which will honor the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a "freedom walk" from the Pentagon's parking lot, past Arlington National Cemetery, to the reflecting pool on the National Mall. The event will culminate with a concert by country-music artist Clint Black, who, presumably, will play "I Raq and Roll."

Some have said that this is ham-fisted nationalism gone awry. Others have noted the distastefulness of exploiting the attacks like this. Salon mentioned the less-than-subtle effort to connect 9/11 to Iraq. James Wolcott noted that the whole thing sounds "like a bad charity fundraising walkathon through the park."

But here's the part that caught my attention: to participate in the "Freedom Walk," you'll need to register with the Department of Defense.

Participants are encouraged to arrive at the Pentagon South parking lot between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. for screening to avoid long lines. The first 1,000 to arrive for screening at the Pentagon on September 11, will receive the official America Supports You campaign lapel pin.

And while I'm certain it's a handsome lapel pin, what, exactly, does "screening" mean?

Indeed, the event's organizers (Rumsfeld's Defense Department) have set up an online registration form that explains, "The Freedom Walk is free and open to anyone who registers…. You MUST have your registration number to check-in!"

That's right, in order to participate in a government-sponsored "Freedom Walk" on public streets past public monuments, from one outdoor public landmark to another, you have to give your name address, phone number, and email address to the Pentagon.

Perhaps, you're thinking, there are security concerns. Maybe, but that's not a good reason to "screen" people who want to participate in this walk. DC hosts elaborate 4th of July festivities, with thousands of people going to the exact same places this walk will go, but no one is screened or forced to register. For that matter, people can watch a presidential inauguration and/or inaugural parade in DC just by showing up.

But before commemorating 9/11 and walking to a Clint Black concert, the Pentagon has a few questions for you.

I don't live in DC anymore, but it'd be fascinating to be on hand to see who gets "screened out" before the event. What if, by chance, someone shows up with a "No Blood for Oil" bumper sticker? Or worse, t-shirt?

Exactly how "free" will our "freedom walk" be?

"I RAQ AND ROLL"

Words and Music by Clint Black and Hayden Nicholas

YOU CAN WAVE YOUR SIGNS IN PROTEST
AGAINST AMERICA TAKING STANDS
THE STANDS AMERICA'S TAKEN
ARE THE REASON THAT YOU CAN

IF EVERYONE WOULD GO FOR PEACE
THERE'D BE NO NEED FOR WAR
BUT WE CAN'T IGNORE THE DEVIL
HE'LL KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE

SOME SEE THIS IN BLACK AND WHITE
OTHERS ONLY GRAY
WE'RE NOT BEGGING FOR A FIGHT
NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY

WE HAVE THE RESOLUTION
THAT SHOULD PUT'EM ALL TO SHAME
BUT IT'S A DIFFERENT KIND OF DEADLINE
WHEN I'M CALLED IN THE GAME

I RAQ, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M BACK AND I'M A HIGH TECH GI JOE
I PRAY FOR PEACE, PREPARE FOR WAR
AND I NEVER WILL FORGET
THERE'S NO PRICE TOO HIGH FOR FREEDOM
SO BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TREAD

THIS TERROR ISN'T MAN TO MAN
THEY CAN BE NO MORE THAN COWARDS
IF THEY WON'T SHOW US THEIR WEAPONS
WE MIGHT HAVE TO SHOW THEM OURS

IT MIGHT BE A SMART BOMB
THEY FIND STUPID PEOPLE TOO
AND IF YOU STAND WITH THE LIKES OF SADDAM
ONE JUST MIGHT FIND YOU

I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M BACK AND I'M A HIGH TECH GI JOE
I'VE GOT INFRARED, I'VE GOT GPS AND I'VE GOT THAT GOOD OLD FASHIONED LEAD
THERE'S NO PRICE TOO HIGH FOR FREEDOM
SO BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TREAD

NOW YOU CAN COME ALONG
OR YOU CAN STAY BEHIND
OR YOU CAN GET OUT OF THE WAY
BUT OUR TROOPS TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE
FOR THE GOOD OLD U.S.A.

I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
IN THE USA
I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M TALKIN' ABOUT THE USA

'Wash Post' Cuts Ties to Pentagon Event After Protests

By E&P Staff

Published: August 15, 2005 11:55 PM ET

NEW YORK The Washington Post announced tonight that it will cease its co-sponsorship of the Pentagon-organized Freedom Walk next month. The paper's involvement had drawn heat from within and outside the paper, with a guild committee today calling for the link to end.

The newspaper told the Department of Defense that it was pulling back on its offer of free ads for the event -- a march up the mall ending with a concert by pro-war country singer Clint Black.

"As it appears that this event could become politicized, The Post has decided to honor the Washington area victims of 9/11 by making a contribution directly to the Pentagon Memorial Fund," said Eric Grant, a Post spokesman. "It is The Post's practice to avoid activities that might lead readers to question the objectivity of The Post's news coverage."

E&P was first to report on the internal dissent at the paper on Friday. Antiwar groups and liberal blogs joined in the protest in the days since.

The Pentagon expressed disappointment with the decision. It has called the event a memorial to 9/11 victims and a salute to our troops.

"Post news employees are subject to disciplinary action for participating in political activities that may be perceived as revelatory of personal opinions or bias," said a resolution passed Monday by leaders of The Post unit of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild. "The Washington Post itself should be held to the same high standard. . . . The Guild supports The Post's stated intention of honoring the nation's veterans, including those who have served in Iraq. But the Post undermines this goal by lending its support to a political event that links the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to the war in Iraq -- a link that The Post, in its reporting, has shown to be false."

The unit represents more than 1,400 Post employees.

In a related move, Post media writer Howard Kurtz noted his opposition to the Post sponsorship in an online chat with readers today. "I wish The Washington Post were not co-sponsoring this event. It is an operation by the Pentagon -- a place that we devote substantial resources to covering -- and therefore subject to all kinds of interpretations," he said in response to a reader question. "It is not the same, in my view, as the corporate side of The Post handing out awards to the best teachers or other kinds of nonpartisan civic activities."

Publisher Bo Jones did not return calls seeking comment on the resolution Monday, but told E&P on Friday that he would remove the Post as a sponsor of the "Freedom Walk" if the event turned out to be "partisan."

The Department of Defense released this statement on Monday: "It is unfortunate that the Washington Post has made this decision not to support the 'Freedom Walk,' but we welcome their donation to the Pentagon Memorial Fund. This is a commemorative event to honor the memory of the victims who died in the attack on the Pentagon and to highlight the yet to be constructed Pentagon Memorial.

"Everyone in American will pay tribute and commemorate this important day in different ways. This event is an opportunity to remember the victims and their families, to reflect on the sacrifices made by our troops and to recommit to the work still ahead.

"Regardless of how one chooses to observe this anniversary we should never forget the sacrifices – both past and present -- made by those in defense of our freedom."

Or force me to invade his country.

Ummm...not "me" personally, of course...someone's got to stay here and do the essential work of supporting the economy.

But damn, I sure talk tough, don't I?
