You pinkie toes can knock freedom and liberty all you want.

But sometimes you have to think positively.

As least we have choice. (just look at our list of available emoticons)

I'm also at liberty to feel like the guy sitting on the beach who thought the tsunami was just another wave. (insert come on in, the water's fine emoticon)

bush (capitalization withheld intentionally) isn't who I fear. I'm more concerned with the goofs that voted for such a limp noodle. They are allowed to drive on the same highways that we do. Now that's scary. In 4 years they'll still be driving, and subsequently jumping out of moving vehicles.

I'm no fan of the president (capitalization withheld intentionally), but even for him that was a terrible speech yesterday.

First off, even the most casual observer had to realize that Michael Gerson desperately needed a thesarus, or maybe "freedom" and "liberty" are really the only two words that tested well in the focus groups.

Second, I guess bush's (CWI) "ask not what your country can do for you" moment in the speech was "We are ready for the greatest achievements in the history of freedom," but just what exactly does that mean? Does it mean we are ready to witness the greatest achievements or act to make those achievements happen? And by freedom does he mean freedom to be puppet regiems of the U.S.?

Third, Bush delivered the speech with all the grandeur of an eighth grader sight-reading a research paper on an unfamiliar subject. He comes off as functionally illiterate when he slowly enunciates multi-syllable words. It's not just that his oration style is stilted, it's that the guy can't speak. Say what you will about Bubba Clinton, the boy could move an audience.

Fourth, the network media did an excellent job of minimizing the protesters at the parade, while simultaneously attempting to make them look trivial and ridiculous. the police did their best to keep organized and peaceful (but vocal) protesters away from the parade route and resorted to mace and billy clubs when the groups dared stray from their heavily guarded cages off Pennsylvania Ave. Another great day for democracy in America.

Yesterday was not a good day for liberalism.

Just what the heck does "the history of freedom" *mean*, anyway? When did freedom begin? Is there an exact date or event where there was suddenly freedom? Are hunter/gatherer societies free? Or are people only free *after* they are oppressed? Or was there freedom once, then it went away for a while, then came back? If so, does the earlier period count? Are events in Axis of Evil countries part of the "history of freedom"? Or just events that involve people who like freedom? What achievements are we talking about here? Specifically freedom-related achievements? Or achievements that happened to take place during "the history of freedom" but didn't actually involve freedom in a direct way?

Bush confuses me like this all the time.

The Fox affiliate in DC did live local coverage of the festivities all afternoon, and at one point yesterday anchor Lark McCarthy had the audacity to say something like "The Washington D.C. police force is the best equipped police force in the country to deal with protesters. They get lots of practice pushing back these kinds of troublemakers and the residents of DC should be proud of their efforts today."

Yeah, not so much Lark.

Washington (CNSNews.com) - Counter-inaugural protesters Thursday accused President Bush of "co-opting Jesus" for political purposes. "He's always talking about symbols of evil, using Jesus as a political pawn," said Rod Murphy from a group called, "10,000 Jesuses."

"The GOP and Bush sound like they have a mandate from Jesus, and I am sorry, but that is not the Jesus that I grew up with," Murphy told Cybercast News Service, noting his opposition to the war in Iraq.

"We just want to remind people that the message of Jesus was something completely different than the Religious Right seems to be pushing on people today," he added.

Other protesters echoed the theme.

"[Bush] talks all the time and his fundamentalist base about ... Jesus," said Ben Stern of Potomac, Md. "He makes his faith very public, yet at the same time he is doing things I consider -- and I am not even a Christian -- that Christian doctrine ... is in opposition to," said Stern, who carried a sign reading, "Who Would Jesus Bomb?"

Bush has not acted like a Christian, according to Stern, because of the "amoral way he is [defecating] on the little guy and, you know, racial minorities."

Chuck Engel of Milwaukee, Wis., lamented that "more Christianity is being pushed into the legal system" to oppose homosexual marriage and abortion.

Other protesters held signs reading, "There is something wrong with a Christian fundamentalist fighting an Islamic fundamentalist," and "Pray for your Soul George Bush and company."

Protester Debbie Richter of New Jersey also mocked Bush's references to his Christian faith.

"He always says that he is talking to God, but what he should be doing is saying, 'I am wrong and I need forgiveness," Richter said, referring to Bush's policies in Iraq.

The counter-inaugural protests also featured flag-burning on Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th St., just blocks from the White House.

Some demonstrators compared President Bush to World War II Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. "I've put a little Hitler 'stache on [a picture of Bush] because quite honestly, historically speaking, we are following that same line as Hitler," said Roger Czeh of Potomac, Md.

Others crowded into the area complained about the U.S. voters who re-elected Bush on Nov. 2. "It's maddening. I mean [Bush] is a war criminal. All this sh** went down and people are just so ignorant. It's just like, 'Oh, he's a cowboy, he's just an everyday guy, he's okay," said Raychel Beatrice.

"The sh** going on in Iraq, no one sees that. It's just the ignorance of the American people," Beatrice said.

That's not "funny." That's the truth, and even people with just a cursory knowledge of Christianity can see it.
