Believe me, I spent a year living in Arkansas (don't ask
-- the worst fucking year of my life.) When the natives weren't mocking my "Chicago gangster" accent (and perfect enunciation), they were busy using the word "nigger" as often as possible. Of course they were all "decent," God-fearing, church-going folks.
However, having said that, I have to point out that not everyone in the South is backwards. When I was down there, I lived in a college town and managed to befriend many liberal, educated people (some of whom are now my closest friends). However, they were outnumbered in at least a 20:1 ratio by slack-jawed yokels who were actually proud of their ignorance.
