The Face Of America

America is an ugly place today. A place where fear and loathing are now
the gold standard. A place where people who stand on the "outside" have
been told "that's where you belong." A place where social, racial and
gender equality are going to be looked at as something of lesser value
than a yellow-ribbon bumpersticker. A place where corporate control will
soon be "the American dream." A place where "faith" is slowly becoming
the sole dominion of the Christian majority. A place where gays and
lesbians have been told that they are less than human...and deserve no
status. A place where reproductive choice will shortly be a distant
memory.
During this election season I saw an ugly face of the country that I love. I saw churches sending literature stating that "we" were all going to hell if we voted for "the devil" John Kerry. I saw Kerry supporters in Columbus spit on, physically beaten and called "fag lovers" for supporting what they consider to be the benchmark of our society...freedom and equality. I heard from a co-worker that Kerry supporters only prop up the "deviants of society." I even had a man, whom I respected greatly, tell me that the candidate who fought for his country was "a yellow bastard."
Welcome to Orwell's "1984" folks. Where people -- through fear and
control -- have somehow been convinced that down is up and up is down.
The face of America indeed...
