Communists rejoice at Saddam's capture

Postby Rspaight » Wed Dec 17, 2003 12:48 pm

It's interesting that more hasn't been made of this. On Sunday and Monday, one of the most common image in the US media (even on Fox News) was a bunch of Iraqis gleefully celebrating Saddam's capture. They were smiling and dancing and waving big red flags...

Um.

Big red flags?

Yep, these were the Iraqi Communists. Those with a memory longer than a couple of days (which doesn't include the major news media, apparently) remember that a huge part of why the CIA backed the Baath Party's takeover of Iraq back in the 60s was that they were anti-communist (to the extent that they ruthlessly repressed the party and killed thousands of members). Now Saddam's gone and the commies are coming out of the woodwork.

So now the likely choices for a real democratic Iraqi government include Islamic extremists and Communists. Yet another reason why there won't be a truly free election in Iraq for a while, if ever...
