All I meant was that if you're used to wearing foam cylinder ear protection, the Etys are no problem. If you're not used to having anything inside your ears, then it does take a little getting used to, that's all.

I use the white silicon tips with the Etys. They also supply the foam ones, but they don't seem to work as well for me. The silicon ones work just fine for me, so I never had a need to look into custom earmolds. I think you'd only need those if you have unusually shaped ear canals. Custom ear molds aren't cheap, though. You have to go to an ear specialist, have the mold made, and then have it manufactured. I think it would easily run you around $200-$300 for that.

The Etys are incredible sounding (but avoid the inferior ER-6). It's as accurate as recorded sound gets. Some find it a disconcerting experience, however, having such isolated pure sound injected directly into the skull.

Anyone heard the Koss R80? I just learned that if I send in my pair (MAC 7) for a warranty issue (lifetime warranty - bonus) they'll be replaced with the R80. Of course, I'd have to find a pair to sample myself anyway, but I'm curious if anyone had any thoughts on them.

After you get to Luke's question, a forum consensus please:

What headphones (home-stereo cans, not earbuds) provide the best bass response? The ones I have now ($70 from Radio Shack) are OK other than the fact that I have to press them against my head to keep all the bottom end from escaping. Also, is there a pair that handles high volume especially well?

So I need a pair that kicks out great bass and stays smooth when they're cranked up. I, too, think the idea of a headphone amplifier is ridiculous; surely there must be a pair that meets my humble needs for less than $200. Whaddaya got?

My current pair probably fits the bill, but alas, they are no longer made.

Try the Koss Pro4AA/Pro4AAT. I had the old model (don't recall the model number) and they're very tough to beat for high SPL and good bass. Sound great with classic rock. They're pretty sensitive as well, and $100 retail. Downside -- heavy and very uncomfortable (IMO), and your ears will sweat.
