Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special CD

I got this today and it's quite a fun disc.

The mixing is great and the mastering is pretty good. The liner notes say that this stuff was mixed in 1982 and assembled into LP reels. The CD is not an exact duplication of the LP...I think they deleted some stuff...but they have tried their best to sequence the disc. There is an occasional fadeout where I imagine an LP side would have ended.

The only strange thing I noticed about the mix is that the bass pans around, on both the 1974 and 1982 material. I've never noticed that effect on a Zappa release before.

There are charming liner notes by John Frusciante and the usual babble-fest by Gail.

The artwork inside when you open it is bitchen - a bunch of stills from the video.

Also, beneath the tray there is a piece of 1/4" analog tape - which must be what Gail's "tape scraps from the floor will be included" comments meant. I was hoping that would mean extra material, but it's still kinda neat.

Nifty. I'm cut off from Usenet for the moment, so I don't have access to opinions re. this.

So it's worth getting? I've never been thrilled with the video itself.

It's absolutely worth getting if you like the '74 band. The mixing is really good - great sound.

Who DOESN'T like the '74 band?

About how much of the video does it duplicate? And it's only a BS item right now, I assume?

I'm so out of the loop at the moment. Ugh.

Is this a soundtrack album once considered for that expensive mail order video that has in recent years appeared on DVD?

The simple answer is probably: yes.
