Townshend Solo Catalog Expanded For Reissue

July 21, 2006, 12:00 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

The Who principal Pete Townshend's solo catalog, a number of titles from which have been out of print for years, will be reissued in expanded editions Aug. 29 via Hip-O/UME. The move is timed to coincide with the Sept. 12 kick-off the Who's fall North American tour.

The majority of the reissue titles feature new bonus tracks. 1980's "Empty Glass," which is best known for the pop hit "Let My Love Open the Door," will feature alternate vocal versions of "I Am an Animal," "Keep on Moving" and "And I Moved" plus an extended version of "Gonna Get Ya." Its 1982 follow-up, "All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes," includes the previously unreleased "Vivienne," which appeared on the initial LP track list but was later pulled, plus the B-sides "Man Watching" and "Dance It Away."

Townshend's 1972 solo debut, "Who Came First," sports the five bonus tracks included on a prior reissue plus three new items: "Mary Jane," "I Always Say" and "Begin the Beguine." 1985's "White City" boasts the previously unreleased songs "Night School" and "Save It for Later" plus a 12-inch vinyl extended mix of "Hiding Out."

All three releases in Townshend's archival "Scoop" series are also part of the reissue campaign, loaded with demos for classic Who songs and fascinating departures from the artist's usual guitar-based compositions.

"When I have come up against any kind of problem in the past I have always dealt with it through music; either through writing a song or literally recording the problem away therapeutically," Townshend writes in the liner notes for the first "Scoop," which was released in 1984. "For many years recording was my one and only hobby."

Townshend's 1977 collaboration with the Small Faces' Ronnie Lane will be available as a DualDisc with a new audio mix, plus the bonus tracks "Only You," "Good Question" and "Silly Little Man," which are outtakes from the sessions.

The 1990 concert souvenir "Deep End -- Live" has been expanded with "Magic Bus" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." The album is drawn from a 1985 charity show at London's Britxon Academy and found Townshend backed by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and a horn section, among other musicians.

Townshend's 1993 rock opera "Psychoderelict" will appear both as a CD and a live DVD taped that year at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The CD includes the non-album track "Psychomontage."

The artist's 1989 musical "The Iron Man," adapted from Ted Hughes' story of the same name, does not include any bonus tracks, according to a spokesperson.

Cool. I'll pick up at least a few of these, since the bonuses look good.

The 1990 concert souvenir "Deep End -- Live" has been expanded with "Magic Bus" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."

One can only hope the sound will improve on the bizarrely bass-free "Signature Series" version.

Townshend's 1977 collaboration with the Small Faces' Ronnie Lane will be available as a DualDisc with a new audio mix

Implying surround? (Or video material?) Strange. Townshend was reportedly working on a 5.1 mix of Empty Glass back before SACD imploded -- did they do this first and then quit?

Why don't they release the entire Deep End Concert on a good sounding DVD? Please - someday!!! The CD on Townshend's web page as Ryan pointed out is "Bass-free" and an embarrasment. What a waste of $$

Who Came First and Chinese Eyes will be must buys for the bonus material. Those Chinese Eyes B-Sides have never been on CD before right? Anyone know if Astley was involved?

Correct, they have not.

Yes, it's Astley. No word on what mood he was in that day.

I'll second the request for a Deep End DVD. This was professionally filmed and has been out on VHS (though not complete IIRC). A DVD would seem like a no-brainer.

Just noticed that "Meher" and "Classified" aren't among the bonus tracks on the Who Came First reissue. Bummer. Has anyone heard the PT Rough Mix outtake "Good Question"? Is it any good?

If they're anything like the Entwistle reissues, the verdict is: not terrible, but you're buying them for the bonus tracks, not the main program (though someone mentioned that "Too Late the Hero" uses a better tape than the sort of on-the-brink Repertoire).

Has "Vivienne" been booted?

In addition to the Pete Townshend titles seeing expanded remasters (in most cases)...
Musictap has also announced U.S. reissues (remasters?) as well for Roger Daltrey with Daltrey (1973), Ride a Rock Horse (1975), and One of The Boys (1977).

Both Townshend and Daltrey CDs will see release on August 29, prior to The Who's USA fall tour.

Empty Glass was in the Cleveland area on Wednesday (as an import, IIRC)...

Is "rock horse" code for something unsavoury?

These (and some Daltrey solo) appeared on Rhapsody yesterday except Rough Mix. They are all on Hip-O Records. Is that right or a possible typo there? Anyway, here's a review of the content only. I'm listening on a computer without the actually discs so a sonic or packaging review would not be fair.

Who Came First- I think all these "bonus tracks" have been on a number of re-releases except I Always Say. Honestly, I've lost track...
His Hands
The Seeker
Day Of Silence
Sleeping Dog
The Love Man
Lantern Cabin
Mary Jane
I Always Say- At 5:50, it's a minute longer than the boot I have. Demo not live as some web sites show.
Begin The Beguine

Empty Glass- all demos
I Am An Animal- Sounds like the boot
Keep On Working- Unlike boot it fades out at end, doesn't end on "Work!"
And I Moved
Gonna Get Ya- Eleven minute demo/working version

Chinese Eyes-
Vivienne- We didn't miss much with this track being left off but it's worth a listen or two.
Man Watching- Same as B side
Dance It Away- Same as B side

White City-
Night School- Very different from video version. More of a slow disco take and not the funky rocker version.
Save It For Later- Studio version, I'm curious when this was done.
Hiding out- Same as B side

Deep End-
Magic Bus- Same as B side
Won't Get Fooled Again- Same as B side

Iron Man- So much for "no bonus tracks"
Dig- Simon on vocals but sounds pretty much the same as the previous
Man Machines- Same as B side
I Eat Heavy Metal- Demo with PT vocals and odd Body Language-type portion.

Psychoderelict-
Psychomontage- Same as B side

Still MIA: Classified (2 versions), Greyhound Girl, Relay (demo from Sometimes A Great Notion), The Secret Policeman's Ball, Ascension Two, Face The Face (extended version), Hiding Out (instrumental version), Life To Life, Real World, Penny Drop (PT demo), Dig (PT demo), Early Morning Dreams (PT demo), Flame (Simon T demo), Electronic Wizardry, I Believe My Own Eyes (PT demo).

It's on the Lifehouse box, although IIRC the mix is a little different, and the Lifehouse box version *does* omit the count-off.
