Something I've been wondering for a while: does anybody here use any filesharing software?

As of late, lots of the stuff I want to buy has become prohibitively expensive. Especially in the case of Japanese bands, I *really* want to know what I'm getting before I get it.

The thing is, however, that my FUCKING SCHOOL throttles P2P bandwidth, so everything is agonizingly slow. No matter: I'm patient.

Currently, I'm a big fan of Soulseek, which--while inconsistent--has the best interface I've *ever* seen, user friendly and powerful at the same time. Similarly, I've used WinMX for some things (in particular, there's supposed to be a huge Japanese community on there), but it isn't nearly as straightforward.

The king of all P2P apps was the old Audiogalaxy way back when...pity it don't exist no' mo'.

Anybody?

I've used all kinds of stuff: Napster, AudioGalaxy, KazaaLite, and LimeWire. I've tried eMule and BearShare. I don't fool with many of them anymore, since I determined that LimeWire and Kazaa are mostly good for contracting viruses.

I also use Carracho quite a bit (Mac only) and I used to use Hotline a lot, too, but it seems to have died. I also use KDX.

But now, thanks to you, I mostly spend my time and bandwidth downloading enormous files via BitTorrent.

I wish wish wish Bittorrent weren't throttled. Sharingthegroove has the most amazing stuff sometiems...and heck, I seeded several shows!

I'm completely addicted to STG. I've gotten a ridiculous amount of stuff from them, including some great old live Genesis footage and, just today, a 2 DVD set of Zeppelin in Seattle that I've wanted for ages. I've also snagged multiple Dream Theater boots and 4 of the Beatles Ultra Rare Trax series, plus an old Michael Hedges boot. That place is amazing.

Everything gets posted while I'm at school.

Apparently, computers that aren't on the *housing* network aren't throttled, so I'm trying to get an "in" with some professor so I can commandeer their computer and download some freakin' DVDs.

(at home, I get yelled at because my entire household shares the DSL line, and I invariably monopolize it to a hilarious extent)

iMesh used to have fast downloads, but too much spyware. Plus, I'd say 9/10 times the file wouldn't be able or it would just hang while checking for sources.

I've been lucky with Limewire but there's a first time for anything. Besides, it seems to me that trying to really push you into getting the Pro version which promises faster downloads. Even with my DSL connection, I was downloading at practically dial up speed. I tried it even during off peak hours and it wasn't much better.
