Holy Cow! It's Raining Big Pink

Postby Ron » Fri Apr 18, 2003 10:13 am

I've been looking everywhere for my "Music From Big Pink" original press Capital LP. Now understand that this is neither my favorite record in the world or even all that essential for me. BUT I WANTED TO HEAR THE FRIGGIN' THING! No dice. Haven't been able to find it. So this morning before I go to work I put in bids on eBay on both the MFSL CD and the EMI Centennial LP--my max bids on each was only 50 cents higher than the current bids but now I'm the high bidder. But with 6 hours to go I figured I'd be outbid on both. But hey, what the hell. No big deal. So now I'm done with work so I stop in a local used record/CD shop and--hot damn! I find a near-mint Japanese pressing of that title for cheap--like $6.50 [These anal Japanese--I live in Japan--the price was marked waay down because the previous owner of the LP had written a few words--lightly in pencil--on the lyric sheet].

In any event, you can pretty much guess the rest. I come home with a Japanese pressing, I won both auctions and about twenty minutes ago found my Capital LP.

Well, Ron, it's like this...all collectors, as you know, will wind up with multiple pressings of more than a few titles...I don't even want to think about what I have, it's both stupid and scary...but BIG PINK isn't the worst Lp you can have extra copies of, that's for sure. I'm very fond of it, different from anything else that came out in 1968. Still haven't gotten over the very interesting 5.1 DVD-Audio mix, which, while trying to keep as close as possible to the spirit of the stereo, of course can't quite make it, but offers a lot more interesting detail and, anyway, the novelty of 5.1 1968 anything is enough for me. My original rainbow 1st press Cap vinyl is still a sentimental favorite, but I have that centennial pressing and thought it came off very well.

I find the best thing to do if there's an album I've had a long time that remains somewhat ambivalent to me, to just immerse myself in it and see what happens. You can't force yourself to love something, but if there is some kind of magic you missed, repetitive play should bring it out. Not everybody is into that kind of thing, but I've always found it best, especially with jazz I'm unfamiliar with. Right now I'm listening to Yma Sumac, which shows my listening interests are probably too far-reaching, but that's what happens when some things become too familiar--go back to the exotic and strange.

Oh sure, I hear that. Just thought it was weird that I went from zero copies to four all in one day. The Jap pressing is growing on me [though that may be because the rainbow Capital is worn and kind of noisy]. Will do a serious comparison soon.

By "here" do you mean Staples or the United States? Well, neither, actually. I teach here in Japan.

I know what you mean; it's crazy what you wind up with(and also wind up mislaying).

I must have seven or eight copies of Love's FOREVER CHANGES in some form: at least three different Elektra labels(maybe four--I'm scared to look), and on three different CD's--each a different mastering. Yikes! And it's not the only one. Pretty wild. But yes, please do let us know what you think.

The former. If you're interested, I heard they have some openings in Mass. Must have excellent computer/spelling skills.

Patirck and Luke: Your both obviosly idiots with IQ's the size of a penis!

Patirck: No, I don't want to work at Staples. And what the fuck did that have to do with my being unable to find my Capital Big Pink, buying a Jap issue and winning two more on eBay? Do you ever post anything post anything that has anything to do with anything the topic? I frist noticed that on my Somebody to Love thread. You alawys try to be so clever. You just talk to yourself on and on and on. Such a lonely person. Are you a homosexual? Sucked any good dick lately? Your a fucking asshole limp dick idiot just like your aviator says. And by the way, how much intelligence did it take to parody Sckott's aviator? Grow a new brain, pal.

And Luke: "Ron must work here." WHATS THE FUCKING POINT? Do you and secret lover boy oooooohhhhh give it to me again harder Patirck enjoy giggling over member's post's? Well, if you two giggle guys would just take a break from all that chocolate speedway love ooooh oooooh action for just ten seconds and try to add some class to this board. Luke, I feel sorry for your girlfriend/wife/significant other. Hey Luke! Heard any good Who albums lately!! Hey, why not post a review of a Who album on the net so we can all bask [look it up you dickless fuckless flaccid homo] in the glow of the intelligence that is you. Which one of your oooooohhh put your dick in my mouth loverboys said this: "Your such a genius and like all geniuses [Steve Stills to name one] have been persecuted throughout history like on sh.tv"? You pay him money to say that or did you pay him pay him in dick? Ooh Luke read me your Who My Generation disc 2 review again. I'm soo hot and I think I'm going to come! What's that you say? Two seconds is missing from the end of the wonky sounding mono My Generation? Oooh, poor baby. Come sit my me and I'll make it all feel better. Here's a newsflash: The Who suck. And so do you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron,

If you're just joking around, nobody is getting the jokes.

If you're not joking around, take a chill pill.
