I have been lurking these many months and would like to report that I am happy to see that you have all been striving to be your best. You make me proud! However, I have noticed the occassional "threadcrap". Please try to avoid this counterproductive behavior in the future. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

I have a question regarding the so called MFSL UD1 and a particular poster and fellow "Gort" named "Dave" at my home forum, Stevehoffman.tv. I have noticed that Dave is particularly vociferous, strident and unrelenting in his claim that UD1's are always superior to their UD11 counterparts. It is his opinion that UD11's have a "slight veil" that is not present on their UD11 brethren. When the veracity of his beliefs are questioned, he has a tendency to claim that his opponent has an inferior system or inferior ears. He becomes quite testy and defensive.

So my question to the board: Why is Dave so hell bent in his insistence of the superiority of the UD1 as compared to the UD11? As an HR professional, I have my own opinion on the emotional drivers behind this strange malady, but I would like to hear your thoughts. I thank you in advance for any insight you may have into this most strange and perplexing phenomenom.

It's a money thing. Of course the Japanese imports are more expensive. So in the back of his mind (and many others people's) they have to justify paying money for something they already own. Therefore, they listen differently.

I realize that this is a joke thread and everything, but my problem has always been that the incessant pointing out of 1st pressings (which I always thought was an LP-only term until this whole older-is-ALWAYS-better vogue came into being) and the Japanese MFSL UDIs, etc., is that occasionally people who *aren't* as "discerning" as some of the big-name players get tricked into following their thinking.

I mean, we've deduced that most of the UDIs are the same as their corresponding UDIIs. Wonderful, because now people don't have to track down those UDIs, and won't pass up seeing the just-as-good UDIIs if they see them. But noooooo, there's a "veil" etc. etc. etc.

Beh.

First off, to those of you lurking from sh.tv (I know you do!), I don't condone Mr. Smarmy's remarks, but at the same time, they are fairly innocent, and if you don't like them (I know you don't!), just ignore them. Then again, I'm not exactly sure why you're here in the first place, since you certainly don't seem to like me.

Good question. I wish I knew the answer. While it is certainly possible (but not certain) that he hears differences on his system, I don't understand why it is so hard for him to accept that other people - regardless of how cheap or expensive their system is - don't hear differences. Any *facts* that disagree with his beliefs seem to be universally met with "I hear what I hear, I'm right, and nothing you say can convince me otherwise."

What's perhaps even more funny is that while the debate rages on about UD vs UDII, various Hoffman pressings *are* different. The Canadian MBBB is at a different level, Who's Next is a mess, and Hwy 61 actually has slightly different EQ in its Japanese and US pressings. That's not to say I hear differences, just that it's interesting that when things *are* different people don't hear them, but when things are the same they are "like night and day."

I think what one *wants* to believe plays a huge roll in whether one actually "hears" differences or not.

The psychiatric literature on such behavior points to 'Dave' probably having an embarrassingly small penis.

Thank you for your thoughts, fellows. I think it's an identity issue type of thing. This whole UD1 thing is how he identifies himself and differentiates himself from the pack. He is the self appointed "UD1 expert". If he were to admit that they were the same then he would have no raison d'etre and would become just like us - nobodies.
