I received the Bob Dylan "Highway 61 Revisited" SACD from CD Universe U.S.A. last friday. Tonight I listened (using headphones) to "Like A Rolling Stone" (the CD layer that is since I don't have a SACD-player) and imagine my surprise some 22 seconds into the track it sounds as if there is a "drop-out" in the left channel. Just when Dylan sings "you're bound to fall" it sounds as if the volume of the left channel decreases somewhat. Just like a "drop-out" for a second or two!!! I listened to the same song on my "Essential Bob Dylan" CD and there was no "drop-out" on that track. Is this a mastering fault on the new SACD or???

The SACD layer does it too, as does the DCC gold disc (though it's somewhat less glaring on the DCC for some reason).

The flaw may well be on the original stereo mixdown master that the SACD and DCC used, and not on downgeneration tapes used for other discs.

Could the drop out be repaired, with current, digital, audio technology ?

I'm sure it could be, either with a small splice from a copy tape, or possibly with some creative tweaking.

Just think of the irony here....a remaster, faithful the original source tape.

I would have LOVED to hear the dialogue, in the Meetings, talking about this dropout.

I wonder if they went all the way to Dylan, himself, to get the approval to leave it in ????

Or, they just never heard it, in the studio ????

Er...this is nothing new. Shit like this happens all the time. There's a bunch of examples on DCC discs, including this one.
