21st Century Skynryd = Jingoistic Crap

Postby Rspaight » Sun Oct 12, 2008 9:29 am

I'm not the world's biggest Lynyrd Skynyrd fan by a long shot, but I must believe that Ronnie Van Zant, who displayed some level of intelligence, wit and empathy in his songwriting, would be horrified at this shit, which I happened to hear on the radio the other day:

We don't have no plastic L.A. Frynds,
ain't on the edge of no popular trend.
Ain't never seen the inside of that magazine GQ.
We don't care if you 're a lawyer, or a texas oil man,
or some waitress busting ass in some liquor stand.
If you got Soul
We hang out with people just like you

My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue

Ride our own bikes To Sturgis
we pay our own dues,
smoking camels, drinking domestic BREWS
You want to know where I have been
just look at my hands
Yeah, I've driven by the White House,
Spent some time in jail.
Momma cried but she still wouldn't pay my bail.
I ain't been no angel,
But even God, he understands.

My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue

Yeah that's right!

My Daddy worked hard, and so have I,
paid our taxes and gave our lives
to serve this great country
so what are they complaining about

Yeah we love our families, we love our kids
you know it is love that makes us all so rich
That's where were at,
If they don't like it they can just
get the HELL out!

Yeah!

My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue

oh..oh..Red, White, and Blue....

Red, White, and Blue

oh..oh....Red, White, and Blue

That's Charlie Daniels Band-type lowest-common-denominator trash. Speaking of ol' Chuck, here's a Greatest Hits gem from him, in which he longs for good ol' days of lynching (and which, to bring things full circle, is clearly inferior to the Ronnie Van Zant song of the same title:)

I ain't nothin' but a simple man
They call me a redneck I reckon that I am
But there's things going on
That make me mad down to the core.

I have to work like a dog to make ends meet
There's crooked politicians and crime in the street
And I'm madder'n hell and I ain't gonna take it no more.

We tell our kids to just say no
Then some panty waist judge lets a drug dealer go
Slaps him on the wrist and then he turns him back out on the town.

Now if I had my way with people sellin' dope
I'd take a big tall tree and a short piece of rope
I'd hang 'em up high and let 'em swing 'til the sun goes down

Well, you know what's wrong with the world today
People done gone and put their Bible's away
They're living by the law of the jungle not the law of the land
The good book says it so I know it's the truth
An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth
You better watch where you go and remember where you been
That's the way I see it I'm a Simple Man.

Now I'm the kinda man that'd not harm a mouse
But if I catch somebody breakin in my house
I've got twelve guage shotgun waiting on the other side

So don't go pushing me against my will
I don't want to have to fight you but I dern sure will
So if you don't want trouble then you'd better just pass me on by

As far as I'm concerned there ain't no excuse
For the raping and the killing and the child abuse
And I've got a way to put an end to all that mess

Just take them rascals out in the swamp
Put 'em on their knees and tie 'em to a stump
Let the rattlers and the bugs and the alligators do the rest

You know what's wrong with the world today
People done gone and put their Bible's away
They're living by the law of the jungle not the law of the land
The Good Book says it so I know it's the truth
An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth
You better watch where you go and remember where you been
That's the way I see it I'm a Simple Man

In 2004, Daniels blasted Kerry every chance he could. He was also part of the "Iraq War is about going after the folks who *caused* 9/11" crowd.

Every time I listen to Elephant Mountain, I have to pretend he had nothing to do with it.

Oh, and the end of that "Red White and Blue" song has a guitar solo that quotes liberally (heh) from "Free Bird." It's almost like they're saying, "Sorry about this garbage we're peddling, but it's the best we can do. Here's something to remind you why we're on the radio at all."

You might remember Daniels as the writer and singer of "Uneasy Rider," in which he, the protagonist, was a dope-smoking hippie who gets in over his head with the local rednecks. As much as I despise Daniels, it's a pretty damn funny song.

In the sequel, "Uneasy Rider '88," Daniels and his friend accidentally wander into a gay bar and beat up on the patrons when one comes on to them. Hardy-har. He manages to trot out every idiotic homophobic stereotype on earth in the process of telling the story.

So did Daniels undergo a radical change in his world view during the 15 years between those songs, or is he just a cynical, opportunistic douche who writes according to how he figures the wind's blowing?
We were right about Vietnam. We were right about Nixon. We were right about Reaganomics. Trust us -- we're right about Bush, too.

He lost his soul in that infamous fiddlin' match with the Devil.
