I prefer it. No limiting or NR (the NR is a bit bothersome in places), and the EQ (or lack thereof) isn't quite as hyped.

Even more stuff coming out of Japan:

Tommy SHM-SACD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UIGY-9089
4/25 (already released)
Flat transfer of the master tapes.

Quadrophenia SHM-SACD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UIGY-9093
5/30
New transfer of the original mix with minimal processing.

Also on CD:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UICY-94800

I'm *assuming* this is just a conversion of the SACD master.

The Who Sell Out SHM-SACD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UIGY-9092
5/30
Flat transfers of the mono and stereo mixes.

My Generation SHM-CD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UICY-94802
6/27
I had originally assumed this was simply a reissue of the 2008 box with scaled down packaging, but it turns out it is going to be newly remastered. I'm told the mastering will be similar to the SHM-CDs from last December (that is, minimal processing).

A Quick One SHM-CD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UICY-94804
6/27
As with My Generation, this is going to be a new remaster, rather than a recycling of the 2008 mastering. At this point I'm assuming the track lists for these two are the same as the 2008 boxes, but I'm not certain. The mixes should be the same at least.

Assuming no glitches, A Quick One might be promising - a chance to get (nearly) flat transfers of the masters. As a side note, the I'm A Boy CD sounds better than I remember it. That is to say, as-is (I re-EQ'd it a bit for my custom AQO CD).

Also, I missed this from last year:

My Generation SHM-SACD
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UIGY-9059
"Contains UK original mono version, which features the 2005 96kHz/24bit mastering based on UK original master tape, and remix stereo version, which features 2003 DSD mastering based on the US master produced by MCA."

Apparently this was not just an SACD issue of the 2008 remaster, but a new remaster. Maybe straight from the above transfers? Not sure, but I guess it's being done yet again for the new CD set.

Also...does anybody else *not* get the new release e-mails from CDJapan? I have an alert setup for The Who but I've never gotten any e-mails...

I have it set up as an RSS feed and that's been working.

Re: Quad, I recently spent about what they're charging for the new SACD on a copy of the MFSL, so I'm not inclined to buy it again unless the sonics are somewhat revelatory (which is not likely).

For Tommy, I don't feel like the old SACD is in need of improvement, at least at that price.

The others are somewhat intriguing, especially the MyGen and AQO sets, since they (presumably) have the bonus tracks from the boxes. I have the AQO box, but never got the MyGen one (I do have the single-disc Japanese mono reissue from a few years ago, and the stereo DE). If the new transfers are good, those might be worth getting.

Yeah, I don't think any iteration of the original mix will be revelatory. I may pick it up, but I'm not expecting much. We'll see.

The DE is pretty good, but it's a little louder than necessary, and there's some NR in a few places. I'm curious to hear the new disc.

My Gen looks identical. AQO is missing the alternate mix of Happy Jack (last track on disc 1). Perhaps that's just a typo.

I've been happy with the recent mastering *style*, re: compression and NR (rather lack thereof). I just hope there aren't any glitches. Thinking back to the 2008 AQO box, Batman and Bucket T in stereo have a really strange hazy distortion throughout, while Disguises (also in stereo) has something odd going on after the solo. And then there are the glitches from the discs from last December. If those aren't an issue, at the very least these should be good sources for further remastering.

Yeah, I thought overall the discs from late last year sounded pretty good, glitches notwithstanding.

CDJapan has posted the track listings for MyGen and AQO (in Japanese) -- they list the Happy Jack alt mix, so the contents for both seem to be the same as the boxes.

I went ahead and ordered those two, but I'm going to pass on Quad and the SACDs for the time being, though the Sell Out SACD is somewhat tempting.

Oh how I love Google Translate:

Spider of 2. [Disc 1] Boris (Mono)
Nest of spiders and mystery 6. [Disc 1] (mono)
7. [Disc 1] That Day Is Done (Mono)
My Way of Love 8. [Disc 1] (mono)
Pinch hitter of love 11. [Disc 1] (mono)
Circle of Love 12. [Disc 1] (mono)
18. [Disc 1] Disugaijizu (Mono)
20. [Disc 1] lonely goodbye (Mono)
Pinch hitter of love 21. [Disc 1] (US Single Version) (Mono)
26. [Disc 2] Lang Lang Lang
42. [Disc 2] lonely farewell

I especially find it interesting that it translated the same characters differently in some cases for the mono and stereo track lists.

Also, I confirmed that the Quad CD will in fact use the same master as the SACD.

"Pinch hitter of love" is *so* great. It works for both "Substitute" and "A Quick One While He's Away."

"Nest of spiders and mystery" is pretty good, too.

I think I'll hold out and see if they put out a Sell Out 2-CD set with the DE track list (which I believe had a semi-unique [in terms of packaging] Japanese issue).

Remastered you mean?

I'm quite honestly amazed at how often this stuff is getting remastered. This is the third iteration of My Generation since 2008; I'm not sure if the earlier CD (with the alt cover) had unique mastering or not. While the DE was released elsewhere, this will still be the third version that includes the mono mix. I believe I made a comment a few months ago how it wasn't likely that certain albums would be newly remastered...guess I was wrong about that.

Yeah, in line with the "minimalist" approach of the last year or so.

It *is* a bit nutty. There must be some real money in the SHM-CD-SACD-LMNOP business.

On one hand, I'd say it seems unlikely considering the new SACD, but then again...see my previous post.

Just to keep things confusing, it looks like SHM-CD versions of the 90s masters of Quad through It's Hard are on tap for next February (in normal CD packaging, I think). Bizarre.

Here's Who Are You, you can find the others linked from there:
