...they were done at Abbey Road and they suck balls - don't buy them.

Just a friendly warning.

Is there any indication of whether Shiny Beast is from a better source tape, at the very least?

I don't know. I only bought "Doc" but I've been told that the others are the same, not surprisingly.

I managed to recently find the Astralwerks (which, I think, is just the US variant of the Virgin reissue) of "Doc" at my local library.

It's a long overdue second go-round, but: I honestly found it to be pretty decent, even as compared with the Caroline/Blue-Plate issue. I recall downloading MP3s of what purported to be this issue way back when, and heard NR on the intro of "Sherrif," but I no longer hear it. It's a bit boosted compared with the Caroline/Blue-Plate, but hardly super-offensive.

I assume you still have the same opinion?

I suppose there's a chance that it's a different remaster. The UK Virgins were Mew-tilated.

Can you post a clip? These still do say "remastered at Abbey Road," and they do sound like Mew's less-offensive work. I still hear some hiss, but I could see how the EQ could rub one the wrong way. The only truly odd EQ work is on "Brickbats," where...well, whatever that instrument is during the first section is almost completely obliterated.

I got rid of mine, remember? I still reach for the Carolines.
