Abkco Records will be releasing an SACD Hybrid disc of The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" that will not only include the original track but 6 remixes. The remixes are by Fatboy Slim, The Neptunes, and Full Phatt. The 6 tracks are broken down to 2 each by the three artists, one a full length remix and the other a radio edit. This will be the first time the original song by The Stones will be available in 5.1 MultiChannel glory. This little gem will also include a US$3.00 coupon that is redeemable for up to 5 of the 22 SACD Stones titles that are presently available. You can get this disc on September 16. "Please allow me to introduce myself..."

Now if they'd only remix, say, Have You Seen Your Mother Baby...

Possibly, they have already, it's just sitting in "the can".

Well, it's possible somebody remixed sometime, but who knows if it was just "for fun" or if it was for a project of some sort.

I think something got lost in a bounce along the way. Both the mono and (unreleased) stereo mixes sound kind of weak, although to be fair, I haven't heard a good copy of the stereo mix yet. Various early mixes (not finished, but with elements of the same backing) have a *killer* drum sound, one that just jumps out at you. When I first heard them I thought "ahh, THIS is what this song is supposed to sound like".

I guess, by now, everyone here knows about the ABKCO, re-release/remaster of Jean-Luc Godard's "Sympathy of the Devil"/"One Plus One" ?

On October 21, Abkco will release a Rolling Stones DVD, Sympathy For The Devil. This release comes in the wake of the September 16th release of Sympathy For The Devil Remixes for SACD.

To me, what was disappointing about the original theatrical release, was how much Godard and the Stones, "took it on the chin", from EVERYONE, because, they were really expecting, "A Hard Days Night".

Hopefully, the second time around, they will appreciate Godard, a little more, but I doubt it.

It also reminds me of how, while viewing an old Yardbirds bio video/DVD, Jeff Beck and The Yardbirds, were, apparently, disappointed with Antonioni and their one off performance of "Stroll On", in "Blow Up". They wanted "A Hard Day's Night" too, it seems.

In times like these, when, sometimes, we are disappointed with the music that's NOT being released, back then, I guess, we were too busy with ALL of the stuff, that was out there, to appreciate ANYTHING !

One differentiation, that was pointed out to me, in another forum, is that the film title, "Sympathy for the Devil", is the ABKCO cut, or version of the film, and the title, "One Plus One", is the director's cut or version of the film.

It will be interesting to see the extras, if any, that are included in this DVD release.

So I picked up the single today. Unfortunately I can only listen to 2 channels at a time, but I will say that just listening to Mick and the lead guitar (that's all that's in the center channel) is quite an experience in and of itself. In a few places there's stuff that must have gotten mixed out, or else I'm just hearing them for the first time.

The piano is no longer mixed out of phase

Listening to just the back is pretty interesting too. It seems as if Mick is mixed in the middle of your head - he's in all five channels. The piano is mixed between the left rear and right front, interestingly enough.

I just sampled the other remixes. More on those some other time.

Godard's 'Sympathy for the Devil' Set for DVD

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - French director Jean-Luc Godard's 1968 film "Sympathy for the Devil," an avant-garde work best known for its in-studio footage of the Rolling Stones working on their song of the same name, is coming out on DVD on Oct. 21, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
Rights to the film are owned by the Stones' former label, ABKCO Records, which recently has been busy releasing the group's "40 Licks" retrospective in partnership with Virgin Records, as well as a series of "Sympathy" remixes by various hot-shot producers. A source said the group's "Rock and Roll Circus" TV special is expected to be issued on DVD sometime next year.

The "Sympathy for the Devil" DVD, which incorporates high-definition transfers from the original negatives, will include the original trailer and a contemporary "Sympathy" video clip cut to the remix from producing duo the Neptunes, the spokesman said.

The film, an examination of western counter-culture, features frequent cuts to London's Olympic Studios, where singer Mick Jagger was leading his bandmates through a recording of "Sympathy," a rock epic steeped in historical and philosophical references. As Godard's cameras roll, the song starts off as a country ditty and ends up as a samba rhythm.

"We just happened to be recording that song," Jagger told Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner in 1995. "We could have been recording (the obscure 1967 album track) 'My Obsession.' But it was 'Sympathy for the Devil,' and it became the track that we used."

The Rolling Stones are currently on the road in Europe with four dates left on their year-long "Licks" world tour. Rumors that they will play China and Hong Kong in November remain unconfirmed.
