SMALL FACES - OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE Original 60s Stereo Mix

Postby Jeff T. » Fri Aug 11, 2006 7:07 am

I have this LP on the TT right now as I write this, going to HD for needle drop. While this is known to be a different mix unissued on any CD, I am not sure that is it a better one. I have to errase a few clicks at start of each side and that is it! It's a good copy and I cleaned it well.

I'd be interested in the member's here comments. I'm using a Near Mint US pressing on pink Immediate Records, round cover. It's being blown out on ebay, and I may as well have it for later trades or someday listening.

Thank god for good sound cards and CD-Rs. Life is good.

This is the first I've heard this is a different mix. While I do know that the segue between "Afterglow ...." and "Long Agos" doesn't seem to be intact on any stereo CD (my first issue Castle CD seems to edit into mono at the last round of the descending "riff", then fades out), I've not heard any vintage vinyl copies.

Xenu? Anyone?

EDIT - I've realised your post doesn't specify mono/stereo. Which is it? Ta!

I had HEARD that some US copies were a different mix, but I always thought it was apocryphal.

Different segue between two key tracks is very strong pointer of a different mix imho.

Title of thread mentioned "stereo" LP I am working from.

And I'm a complete dunce. Thank you.

Except, it's more a case of "it goes from stereo to mono, then fails to segue". That seems to indicate someone took a stereo mix, then decided to replace the end of one song with the mono mix, for one reason or another. What about the rest of the album? Are there any further differences apart for that?

I've seen Xenu (a.k.a. David Goodwin) mention "Abkco" in relation to the seque thing; other than this, I can't tell you anything further.

And if you were to seque something, wouldn't you would want to leave it until after a mix session?

FWIW, would anybody like a review of the Deluxe Edition?

Yes, it is completely possible there is some stereo, and then back to mono on the same side of the album. But both my UK and US originals do this. So it is not a matter of something being changed later for this particular original issue.

I will have to get the CD and run them both at the same time A to B and compare. I just read years ago about a later mix and the way to tell which of them one has.

Thanks for comments.

Can anyone post a lossless sample of the segue (ie. the last 30 seconds of 'After Glow' combined with the first 30 seconds of 'Long Agos...')?

TIA & much obliged!

What's that extra B for?
