Tommy CDs (Polydor)
Interesting...got a Polydor copy of Tommy today (2 CDs; 800 077-2). Did a quick check, and Overture is digitally identical (or at least nulls) with the "NM" MCA disc. So either MCA just copied the Polydor for the "NM" set, or there's an earlier Polydor that I don't have. This one says "Made In Germany" on the inner rings, so it's obviously post 1990.

This matches my set; I got mine 1988/89.
Luke, do you still have that flac of overture? Is it the same?

Phil: It's around here somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. Andreas, can you send me a FLAC of Overture?
I'm not yet clear if the final number means anything on PolyGram pressings. Perhaps a new glass mastering, but I haven't yet seen something different digitally. Always a first, I suppose.
Everyone else have a double wide case? Mine's a slim-line. I should ask the seller if he got it like that, or switched out the double.

No need, it's just as easy for me to upload it again:

Mine's a double case, btw.

Here is Overture from my double CD. (Big old-fashioned double case. The spine reads "800 077-2 YH2". )

It is a completely different mastering than what Phil posted above. Phil's is more compressed, almost clanging. Really surprising, they sound very different.

Wow. Very different indeed, and the above sample is a lot quieter.
The bottom end is just boomy on my discs. It's more balanced an Andreas' sample. The midrange isn't as smooth on Andreas' clip, but overall, it's still better for me - seems to be from a better tape aswell; there's an anomoly on the second hit on my sample - the other clip doesn't have it.

Downloading both now. I'll try and get to them this afternoon. So much for not remastering...

Other than some different samples at 0:00:26, EAC seems to think Phil's is the same as mine. I'll load stuff up in ProTools later.

Can we have a look at disc 2 aswell?
How about Pinball Wizard:

The two masterings of Pinball Wizard are different in the same manner. Louder, more compressed and booming on Phil's sample, thinner and less bass/lower midrange but more dynamic on mine.
