How many *different* versions of Pet Sounds have come out on CD?
I've tried to recall, and research it online, but have found thus far no definitive or complete history on this. Maybe it's there, but I just haven't come across it yet.
Here's what I have found (or recall) for PET SOUNDS:
• original cd - mono
• 1990 remastered(?) cd - mono (Mark Linett w/ Larry Walsh)
• 1996 mark linett mono remaster
• 1997 "Pet Sounds Sessions" 4cd boxset (which included the original mono release, the first stereo release and 3 CDs of out-takes and rehearsals)
• "Pet Sounds Sessions" box cd promo sampler (features the stereo version of Pet Sounds)
• 1999 remastered cd - mono & stereo (w/ 2 bonus tracks)
• 2000 HDCD remaster of the original MONO mixes. Does not include the bonus tracks that were on previous issues.
• 2001 remastered cd - mono & stereo versions (w/ some remixed vocals) with "Hang on to Your Ego" (the original version of "I Know There's an Answer") as the one bonus track in mono; also a vinyl release
• Steve Hoffman remastered DCC gold disc
• Pet Sounds DVD-A disc (DVD-A remix in mono, stereo & 5.1 surround)
• Brian Wilson - "Pet Sounds Live"
And...
• the upcoming Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary CD/DVD set...
Some of these may be inaccurate, and some dates (years) may be inaccurate.
Feel free to correct.
Can anyone *please* help sort out this mess?

I am not aware of a mono remaster from 1996...?
The "original CD" was released in 1987 in Japan only.
Then there is the Japanese Pastmasters CD from 1989.
The 1990 mono CD was the first US release.
These three are all derived from the same digital transfer (noise reduction, intros spliced in from the multitracks), but I don't know if they are different.

By who? Only Capitol would have access to the multis. Somebody mastered it *there* (apparently putting some work into it), only to have it not be issued in the US for a few years? And have it be issued overseas?

That's three years after the Beatles CDs appeared in the U.S.
Is this correct?

Avid birder Dick Davenport passed away in 1986 during a moment of triumph, having finally spotted the rare Bachman's Warbler. Andy Lippincott died of AIDS in 1990 while fulfilling his dream of hearing "Pet Sounds" on CD. Succumbing to Alzheimer's, Congresswoman Lacey Davenport was escorted Heavenward by her dear departed in 1998. In the wake of Phil Slackmeyer's offstage demise in 2002, son Mark had difficulty rounding up mourners for the funeral.

Two booklets containing more than you ever wanted to know about Pet Sounds and its participants are also included. David Leaf's excellent notes from the 1990 disc are carried over and updated as appropriate. An interview with Paul McCartney, an avowed fan of the album, dropped from the earlier package before shipping, is included here as well. But the real treasure among the printed material is a week's worth of Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury, from May 1990, in which Andy dies happy, now that Pet Sounds is out on CD. Andy is no longer with us, and neither are Carl or Dennis Wilson, but I have to think they'd be pleased with the box set that is, um, here today.

It's only been in the past 20 or so years that Pet Sounds has really acquired its reputation as one of the all-time "classic" albums from the 60's. In the 70's and the first half of the 80's, Pet Sounds was regarded by many critics as a self-indulgent flop, and Brian Wilson was viewed more as a head case burnout than an eccentric genius. In that context, Pet Sounds not being available in the US on CD is not that shocking. At any rate, prior to 1990 *none* of the original BB albums were in print, were they? The only available CDs were greatest hits.
