I finally got a copy of this and I'm really excited and 15 seconds into the first song I'm ready to puke. I would love to punch Jon Astley in his big fat fucking face.

Yeah. I seem to remember the Baba with vocals being really bad in the intro as well.

Bargain doesn't seem too bad, anyway.

It would sure be nice to hear Flat Transfers (TM) of those tapes.

Musically how does it stack up? I mean, if you have Who's Next and all the officially released Lifehouse "outtakes" (if you can call them that), does this set trump them?

Well...it depends on if you like the demos better or not.

Personally, I think the demos are great, but I don't look at it as an either/or situation.

Of course, things like "Teenage Wasteland" were never recorded by the Who.

I love the music on 'Chronicles,' but the noise reduction really is distracting, and I'm not overly sensitive to NR. Just comparing the version of "Mary" on 'Scoop' to the one on the box set makes the difference clear.

It wasn't mastered by Astley, but the Deep End Live 2CD set from EelPie is a disaster, too -- the bottom end is completely shaved off for some reason; there's literally no bass on the fucking thing.

We know Townshend can't hear, but maybe he should hire someone who can.

That Deep End double is horrendous. I have not bought anything else from Eelpie since I got suckered on that one. I was expecting some consistency in quality (like the Richard Thompson Beeswing discs) - boy was I wrong .

Anyone have the Fillmore '96 CD? I got a complete copy of that show and never bothered with the Eel Pie issue, even if mine has a bit of hiss on it.

I'll third the opinion of the Deep End discs. I was excited when this was released because I have a soft spot for that show. I've got a boot of the whole thing, but foolish me assumed that this would be better.

Ha. I think they mastered the damn thing with a high-pass filter set at 200Hz. I thought my subwoofer was broken. What a piece of crap. I'm not spending any more money on those Eel Pie "signature" discs, either.

Maybe we'll get a decent-sounding DVD one of these days.

That would be great. A DVD of the whole show is probably number one on my "want list". Fortunately I have a KBFH show with some tracks that did not make it to the original Deep End CD (Give Blood being one)
