Don't know how much interest here there is for this but I thought I'd post on it anyway.
Evidentally the first cut from David Gilmour's first solo album in 22 years (take that Kate Bush!) "On An Island" has been starting to make the rounds on the radio.
There's a couple of downloads floating around of it (one from a New York Classic Rock station and the other from Argentina). The one from New York is the one to seek out as I've heard the Argentian one has the DJs chattering throughout the song. I've got mine through a link over at Fleeting Glimpse (www.pinkfloydz.com).
First impression? I think it's by far one of his best solo pieces. The lyrics are a joint work between him and his wife Polly (similiar to TDB) and don't seem as cringeworthy as some of the TDB stuff. Overall, the mood is a throwback more to his first solo album than his second. It has a drifting quality with a brilliant guitar solo (through trunicated on the NY version, there is supposedly a long outro solo) and wonderful harmonies from Gilmour, David Crosby, and Graham Nash (who I'm not really all that keen on) that works really well in the song.
There's also some instrumental music playing in the background at Gilmour's official site - davidgilmour.com - which appears to change every so often as the piece now isn't the same one that was there when I logged in earlier today.
Needless to say, it has piqued my interest more in this record.
XM is supposedly playing it as well. Curious to hear other opinions on it.
