New Prince compilation

Postby MK » Sun Jan 29, 2006 5:47 pm

Anybody hear about this? Apparently a new Prince compilation is coming out, released by Warner Strategic Marketing/Rhino. The title is supposedly "Ultimate Prince" and here's the tracklisting:

Disc 1:

1. Purple Medley
2. I Wanna Be Your Lover
3. Uptown
4. Controversy
5. 1999
6. Little Red Corvette (Dance Mix)
7. Let's Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix)
8. Erotic City (12" Version)
9. Purple Rain
10. When Doves Cry
11. I Would Die 4 U
12. Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix)
13. She's Always In My Hair (12" Version)
14. Raspberry Beret (12" Version)

Disc 2:

1. Kiss (Extended Version)
2. Sign 'O' The Times
3. U Got The Look (Long Look)
4. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
5. Hot Thing (Extended Remix)
6. Alphabet St.
7. Thieves In The Temple (Remix)
8. Diamonds And Pearls
9. Gett Off
10. Money Don't Matter 2night
11. Cream (N.P.G. Mix)
12. 7 (Acoustic Version)
13. Sexy Mutha
14. Nothing Compares 2 U
15. My Name Is Prince

I wish I didn't have to buy the rest to get those special mixes. Anyway, if the mastering sucks (I think it will but I hope it doesn't), this would be your final warning to buy the old CD's. Unless you prefer vinyl, which would be the better option, but I don't have a turntable.

'Hot Thing',, while a cool llittle song, is *already* too long on the SIgn of the Times album -- do we really need an 'extended remix'?? ;> And are these' special' mixes new, or are they old dance mixes?

Anyway, this is a pretty good set... and I'll bet the mastering will be blow-you-out-of-the-room loud.

Where's the 10-minute extended "Mountains"? Shit, it's only the best 12-inch he ever released.

Ach, I'll probably get it anyway....

That's a very odd compilation. It's typical, though: they're trying to appeal to both the casual fan and the hardcore collector, but satisying neither.

They should have just made a compilation of extended mixes. Many of the ones they're including really are great: the 12" version of "Let's Go Crazy" is definitive and many of the others (like the Sheila E. remix of "Pop Life") are at least as good as the more familiar versions. Still, where's the 10-minute live version of "I Would Die 4 U?" (At least I have that one on a 3" German CD-single.) Where's the extended mix of "Hello?" Where's the 20+-minute version of "America?" This could have been something special.

I also wish it didn't extend into the 90's. I can't say I've been dying to hear the "N.P.G. Mix" of "Cream." At least "Batdance" isn't on there.

Fuck, no Prince today. Rhino supposedly postponed it for a few months, and I called Target just to make sure: the guy says they just got a note today that no one in the area is getting it. He doesn't know anything else about the CD, just that it isn't shipping today as planned and that they'll probably get more info later (most likely that Rhino's postponed its release).

God, I love the Internets.

Thanks to the generous souls at Oink, I now have bit-perfect copies of Ultimate Prince and 3121 and I didn't pay a fucking thing for either of them.

I'm disappointed with the sound. Not surprised, but it's like all of his recent CD's. The bonus disc is a nice to have.

I've been listening to my pirated copy this afternoon and here are some random impressions:

1) In general, I like the new mastering. It's a bit loud, but I can live with that.

2) The track listing leaves a lot to be desired, especially on the first disc.

3) I can't imagine what criteria they used to determine whether to use the LP versions or the single edits. Why did they use the truncated version of "When Doves Cry" and the full LP version of "Alphabet St?"

4) The early-90's stuff is even worse than I remembered. "Gett Off," "Diamonds and Pearls" and "My Name Is Prince" suck balls. Christ, "Gett Off" sounds like the fucking Fly Girls should be dancing to it. It couldn't be any gayer if he'd done a duet with MC Hammer.

5) That 12" version of "Kiss" is awful. I don't know what the hell he was thinking. I'd stopped buying his 12" singles by that time, so this is my first exposure to it.

6) Where the fuck is "Erotic City?" I thought it was on the initial track listing a few months ago. It's sorely missed.

7) A Prince hits collection without "When You Were Mine" is a crime.

8) I hate it when the "8" and ")" create a fucking smiley with sunglasses.
