NEW YORK (AP) -- Black Sabbath, Miles Davis and the Sex Pistols are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, the organization announced Monday. (Read a profile of Black Sabbath.)

Also to be inducted into the class of 2006: 1980s New Wave band Blondie and Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who founded A&M records in 1962, will receive a lifetime achievement award in the non-performer category.

Inductees into the side-men category will be announced at a later date.

Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the nominations. Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

I'd object to Miles, but they've already inducted Louis Armstrong. Seriously, jazz plays a key element in certain parts of rock history - Steely Dan, the Allman Brothers, etc. - but these inductions are B.S. Miles gets singled out because he's virtually a jazz GOD, and maybe Coltrane's next, but what about Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, etc.? If Louis's in, why not Jelly Roll Morton? Is Bird in? How about Diz? They're musical contributions to rock are probably equal, but at that point, it seems ridiculous to single each one out by inducting them into a "rock" hall of fame.

Outside of that, Patti Smith, Gram Parsons, and the Stooges get snubbed again, Roxy Music, King Crimson, New York Dolls, MC5, Modern Lovers, I don't know if they were even nominated but they're not in.
