Paint It Black - more SACD wierdness

Postby Phil Elliott » Mon Nov 07, 2005 5:17 pm

I skimmed through the Stones FAQ a few times looking for mention of Paint It Black, and the fact that the channels are WAY out of sync until somewhere around the line "I see the girls walk by..." - and it's not in there. Did I actually read about this somewhere, or have I dreamt it? It's a while since I fixed it for a CDR project (Big Hits 1&2 onto 1 CDR from the Hot Rocks discs), but I seem to remember having to shift one of the channels by thirteen samples until said point. Obviously, the stereo image prior to the fix was completely shot.

Was this a section that was manipulated outside DSD, then spliced in "by hand" as per Bob Ludwig on the Sonoma workstation? Is the Sonoma so unintuitive that audio channels have to be moved around seperately... or am I completely wrong about what might have happend here?

Really?

I don't know if I've ever listened to that on headphones, actually.

I'll get back to you.

(I was miffed, FWIW, that said version of "Paint It, Black" didn't "fix" the dropout in the song)

I only have it on the promo comp, but I'll be damed. Although I probably wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't listening OOPS'd or listening specifically for it.

I'd throw a sample up, but my Mac is acting up again.

I'm burning a disc (dual-layer, and it's taking fucking forever) but I'll throw an ABCD of it up in a min (along with the Grass Roots sample).

Actually, no point. I was going to finally do a comparison of this vs. the old London HR1 vs. the old Big Hits Japanese, but I realize there's no point.

Hearing these side-by-side, I'm less fond of the new ABKCO "Paint it Black"...I should see whether they changed it from the sampler too, actually.

Re. Phil: You're a fucking genius. What happened...well, I guess the manipulation they were doing to "blank out" the channel involved some cutting and pasting, and someone was lazy about pasting it back in place. Doesn't surprise me in the least, as "careless" is something we're hearing a lot about these...

SACD OOPS sample

London CD OOPS sample

Seemed to be off by 10 samples to me, but YMMV.
