Interstellar Overdrive mono mix weirdness

Everyone's familiar with the wild stereo panning at the end of the stereo mix of Interstellar Overdrive right? The mono mix is obviously not a fold down as there are organ and guitar parts on the mono mix that aren't present on the stereo but....the swirling ending (not the whole track) on the mono mix sounds just like a fold down of the stereo mix:confus:. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Might that bit be an edit piece that never received a dedicated mono mix and was simply folded down and tacked on the end of the true mono mix? I really doubt Norman Smith and Peter Bown did that but I can't think of any other explanation

I think the main song is overdubbed live during mono mixing and the ending is edited on but lacking overdubs, which is why it sounds similar to the stereo mix. It doesn't seem like a fold-down to me.

It's also possible that the stereo mix of the end section is just the mono mix panned around and around.

Yeah, come to think of it, it's also the only part of the song where it really sounds like two Pink Floyd's playing simultaneously, as the mono overdub has been described.

Interesting, I hadn't considered that. I think you're right but unless I'm missing something that doesn't explain why the ending on the mono mix sounds so screwy with the levels going up and down..

I know. I meant it's the only spot where you can REALLY tell, because they're so out of sync.

Is it possible the "panning" section was a reduction to two tracks on the multis? That would explain what you are describing on the mono mix at a guess ...
