Johnny Cash: At San Quentin

Postby lukpac » Mon Jul 07, 2003 9:47 am

Does anyone know the whole story behind this one? I believe the reissue claims to be "complete", but the way things are edited make me highly doubt that. Also, I found this floating around (posted a number of places):

Cash purists who've seen the Granada TV special made in conjunction with the album know that this CD is neither "complete" nor "uncensored." At least two songs are missing: "Orange Blossom Special" and "Jackson." (At three different places on the disc you can hear convicts calling out the latter title; rest assured Cash and his wife did oblige them.) An off-color remark Cash made to a TV cameraman at the close of "I Walk the Line" has been trimmed. Also, unlike last year's "At Folsom Prison" reissue, the selections here are not in original running order. But knowing this diminishes neither the importance of what IS here, nor the CD's enjoyment factor.

Does anyone know the order of the original show? Also, Folsom Prison Blues purports to be unreleased on the new CD, but it's clearly listed on the original LP artwork included. I don't have the original version, so...anyone know?

On the reissued CD, the tracks from the original album are (apparently) just remastered, while the bonus tracks are remixed. It seems strange that the entire show wasn't remixed, as it *is* a live concert, and some of the original mixes (and edits) are pretty poor sounding.

I'm a little uncertain about what you're asking. The newest reissue has both "oragnge blossom" and "Jackson." Don't remember about the "off color" remark, but I'll check tonight. I don't know if anything else is missing. Just noticed, by the way that this has been released on SACD.

Man, it's a bear to keep up with Johnny's prison albums. :)

Live at Folsom Prison indeed has "Orange Blossom" and "Jackson" and is on SACD.

I think Luke was asking about Live at San Quentin, which lacks those tracks and isn't on SACD.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Live at Riker's Island. No, wait, that doesn't exist. I think. Seriously, it's confusing, especially when you add in the song "Folsom Prison Blues"...

Folsom Prison Blues is on the original San Quentin LP.

Yes, but all of the CD artwork claims it is unreleased. Is there something different about the version on the new CD? Unedited?
